Amazon's New AWS Leader: Adam Selipsky

Following Jeff Bezos’ transition to executive chairman, and Andy Jassy’s subsequent assumption of the Amazon CEO position, discussions arose regarding Jassy’s replacement at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Several internal candidates were considered strong contenders, including Peter DeSantis, the vice president of global infrastructure at AWS, and Matt Garman, who holds the role of vice president of sales and marketing. However, the appointment of Tableau CEO Adam Selipsky came as a surprise to many.

Selipsky's Return to AWS

Andy Jassy promptly informed employees of his decision via email, emphasizing Selipsky’s pivotal role in launching the AWS division back in 2005. He highlighted Selipsky’s eleven years of dedicated service in building the unit alongside him before his departure for Tableau.

Jassy stated, “Adam possesses exceptional judgment, a relentless focus on customers, proven team-building skills, expertise in demand generation, and valuable CEO experience, all of which will strengthen our already robust AWS leadership team.” He further noted Selipsky’s deep understanding of AWS’s culture and business operations.

Jassy has overseen AWS since its inception, guiding its evolution from a modest internal project focused on storage web services to a dominant force with a current annual revenue run rate of $51 billion.

Selipsky is now tasked with leading this substantial organization, and his qualifications appear well-aligned with the demands of the position.

Transition from Tableau

A veteran executive, Selipsky’s experience extends to successfully transforming Tableau from a desktop software provider into a cloud-centric company, despite being away from AWS during its period of rapid expansion.

Salesforce acquired Tableau in June 2019 for $15.7 billion, and Selipsky continued to lead the company until now. The opportunity to helm AWS evidently proved too compelling to resist.

Previously, Selipsky was identified as a potential successor to Salesforce CEO and chairman Marc Benioff, as highlighted in a report on Salesforce’s executive talent pool. However, with Bret Taylor emerging as the likely heir apparent, Selipsky may have been seeking a new professional challenge.

Looking Ahead

Selipsky will officially rejoin AWS on May 17th, spending several weeks collaborating with Jassy during a transition period.

As Jassy assumes the role of Amazon CEO, a continued close working relationship between the two leaders is anticipated, mirroring their decade-long partnership.

AWS is poised for continued growth under Selipsky’s leadership, building on the foundation established by Andy Jassy.

The appointment signals a commitment to maintaining the innovative spirit and customer-centric approach that have defined Amazon Web Services.
