Sync Google Calendars to Windows 8 - A How-To Guide

The Essential Role of a Calendar Service
A reliable calendar service is a necessity for organization. Despite exploring alternatives like Windows Live and iCloud, I consistently find myself returning to Google Calendar for its functionality.
Generally Smooth Operation with a Synchronization Caveat
Typically, my experience with Google Calendar is seamless and without issue. Its user-friendly interface and broad compatibility are significant advantages. Most modern operating systems, both on desktop and mobile platforms, now offer native support for Google Calendar.
However, configuring the synchronization of multiple calendars has historically presented some challenges. This holds true even when using Windows 8.
Windows 8 Calendar and Initial Synchronization Limitations
The built-in calendar application in Windows 8 boasts an appealing design. Adding and synchronizing it with a Google Calendar account is a straightforward process, completed within moments.
A notable limitation, however, is that the application initially displays only the primary calendar by default. This can be problematic for users who rely on multiple calendars for different aspects of their lives.
Synchronizing All Google Calendars in Windows 8
The following steps will guide you through the process of synchronizing all desired calendars from your Google Calendar account within the Windows 8 Calendar application.
This ensures comprehensive visibility of all your scheduled events and appointments.
Connecting Your Google Account
It’s likely you’ve previously linked your Google account – potentially Google Calendar – to Windows 8, perhaps within the Calendar application itself or another program. If this hasn't been done, the following steps will guide you through the process.
Launch the standard Calendar application and access the application settings via the Windows Charm Bar. The Charm Bar can be activated by pressing the Win+C keys, or by moving your mouse from the bottom-right corner of the screen upwards.
Within the settings panel, navigate to the Accounts section and choose 'Add an account'. Select Google as the desired account type, as illustrated in the image above, and input your login details.
Following authentication, the Calendar application will initiate synchronization of your primary Google Calendar with your computer.

This process ensures your calendar information is readily available within the Windows 8 environment.
Modifying Your User Agent to Simulate iOS
A user-agent switcher is a tool that allows a website to be presented with false information regarding your browser and operating system. Specifically, we aim to make it believe you are accessing it from an iOS-based device, such as an iPhone or iPad.
This technique is employed to alter how a website responds, as sites often deliver different content based on the detected user agent.
Implementing a User-Agent Switcher
To achieve this, a browser extension designed for user-agent manipulation is required.
- For Google Chrome users, the "User-Agent Switcher" extension is a suitable option.
- Mozilla Firefox users can utilize the "User Agent Switcher" add-on. (Note: availability may vary).
Once installed, these tools enable you to temporarily modify your browser's reported user agent. Select an iOS profile – either iPhone or iPad – from the extension's options.
This alteration will cause the website to render as if accessed from an iOS device, potentially revealing different functionalities or content.
Disabling JavaScript Temporarily
The subsequent step involves the temporary deactivation of JavaScript. Within the Google Chrome browser, navigate to Settings, then proceed to Advanced Settings, followed by Privacy, and finally Content Settings. Select the option 'Do not allow any site to run JavaScript', as illustrated below.

As an alternative approach, users of Mozilla Firefox can access Options, then navigate to Content settings. From there, simply deselect the 'enable JavaScript' checkbox.
Adjusting Your Google Sync Configuration
Having modified your user agent and deactivated JavaScript as previously explained, navigate your browser to m.google.com/sync/settings/.
Viewing Synchronized Devices
This page displays all devices currently configured to synchronize with your Google account. You will find Windows 8 listed, identified as 'WindowsMail'. Select this entry to proceed.
Enabling Multi-Calendar Support
Initially, the available settings may appear limited. Examine the address bar within your browser. Locate the segment &supportMultiCalendars=false at the URL’s conclusion.
Modify this to &supportMultiCalendars=true and then press the Enter key. This action will reveal all calendars linked to your Google Calendar account.
Selecting Calendars for Synchronization
Now, you can select the specific calendars you wish to synchronize with the Windows 8 Calendar application. Simply check the boxes corresponding to your desired calendars.
Finally, confirm your selections by pressing the Save button. This will initiate synchronization of the chosen calendars.
Restoring Your User Agent and JavaScript Configuration
It's important to return your user agent to its original, default setting. This can be accomplished using the extension or add-on previously employed for modification.
Furthermore, ensure that JavaScript is re-enabled, having been temporarily disabled during step three of this guide. Following the subsequent synchronization of the Calendar application with your Google account, all previously missing calendars should reappear.
