How SwoonMe Works

Upon joining, users submit a selfie which is then transformed into a personalized avatar. This avatar represents the user within the application’s interface. Subsequently, individuals record a brief audio clip to introduce themselves and articulate their relationship aspirations.

Users also complete a series of questions, covering topics such as desired relationship commitment – ranging from casual encounters to marriage – and individual love languages, including physical touch, gift-giving, and verbal affirmation.

When users browse SwoonMe, they encounter these audio introductions and avatars, facilitating more considered decisions based on personality rather than immediate visual assessment. Matching users are then prompted to deepen their connection through voice messaging and interactive icebreaker games, postponing the exchange of photos and text-based communication.

The genesis of SwoonMe can be traced to Tanvi Gupta, a former product specialist at Facebook. Her experience encompassed significant contributions to Messenger and Instagram Direct, including the development of features like Messenger reactions and Android chat heads.

Gupta’s decision to create SwoonMe stemmed from her own frustrating experiences with existing dating apps. She frequently encountered men who prioritized immediate selfie exchanges and quick meetups over genuine engagement with her profile content.

“Modern dating applications often place excessive emphasis on physical appearance,” Gupta explains. “I recognized a need for a platform that prioritizes connection based on shared values and personality, fostering the potential for long-term relationships.”

Leveraging the Rise of Audio-Based Social Networking

Development of SwoonMe commenced during the pandemic, a period marked by a surge in demand for innovative online connection methods. This trend fueled the emergence of audio-centric applications like Clubhouse and its subsequent imitations.

Gupta drew inspiration from Clubhouse, recognizing its potential for fostering intimate and meaningful interactions through audio-based communication. She aimed to replicate this dynamic within the context of online dating.

“Platforms such as Clubhouse have demonstrated that removing visual elements can encourage deeper engagement with topics and foster a greater sense of intimacy,” Gupta states. “SwoonMe seeks to translate this principle into the dating sphere.”

Appealing to Those Seeking Serious Relationships

While SwoonMe welcomes users with diverse relationship goals, it is anticipated to particularly resonate with individuals seeking committed partnerships. The app’s emphasis on audio-based interaction and thoughtful engagement necessitates a greater investment of time and effort.

SwoonMe is not the first application to explore the use of avatars as a substitute for profile photos. Avatar-based social discovery apps have gained traction in Asian and Brazilian markets, but have yet to achieve widespread acceptance in the United States, particularly within the dating sector.

However, this landscape may be shifting, as Match Group, the parent company of Tinder, recently acquired Hyperconnect, a Seoul-based social app developer, in a deal valued at $1.73 billion. This acquisition includes applications featuring AR-powered avatars.

Distinguishing SwoonMe from Existing Alternatives

The concept of a “face reveal” has been previously explored by other dating applications, often as a promotional gimmick. Several voice-based dating apps have also emerged, with varying degrees of success.

For instance, Jigsaw, an app launched in February, raised $3.7 million for its “anti-superficial” approach, utilizing puzzle pieces to obscure users’ faces until a certain level of engagement is achieved. However, Jigsaw initially focused on obscuring full-body photos and banned selfies, potentially leading users to base judgments on body type rather than personality – a counterproductive outcome.

Following feedback, Jigsaw has since reversed its selfie ban and now accepts a wider range of images.

Empowering Women in the Dating World

Gupta emphasizes the importance of providing women with a safer and more respectful dating experience, free from objectification. She believes SwoonMe offers a viable alternative.

“As a woman, I am personally frustrated by the pervasive objectification within the dating world,” Gupta explains. “I desire to be valued for my personality, my voice, and my contributions to a relationship, not solely for my appearance. Physical attraction is important, but it should not be the sole determinant.”

Unexpectedly Popular with Men

Interestingly, SwoonMe currently boasts a larger male user base than female. The application is inclusive of all gender identities and sexual orientations, addressing a universal need for more meaningful connections.

While early user numbers are still being collected, Gupta reports positive feedback from beta testers.

Challenges and Future Plans

A key challenge for SwoonMe lies in attracting individuals who are genuinely seeking long-term relationships, as many potential users may avoid dating apps altogether. The application also faces competition from video-first dating platforms like Snack, which cater to Gen Z users accustomed to sharing video content.

Currently, SwoonMe does not generate revenue but plans to introduce premium features as its user base expands. The company envisions extending its platform beyond dating to support ongoing connection and communication within established relationships.

SwoonMe has officially launched after a period of beta testing, initially targeting the dating markets of San Francisco and Los Angeles, but accessible to anyone interested in trying it.

The startup is currently seeking $1 million in seed funding to support its growth and development.
