Reverse Meme Search - Find the Origin of Memes | Antimatter

The Evolution of Digital Communication: A New Tool for Memes
Memes have become an integral component of modern communication, even appearing in headlines. However, modifying existing memes can often present a cumbersome experience for users.
Typically, the process involves locating a meme template and then figuring out how to incorporate text, sometimes requiring the adaptation of Instagram story drafts into dedicated photo-editing software.
Introducing Antimatter’s Reverse Meme Search
Instead of extensive searches through Google Images for suitable meme templates, Antimatter’s newly launched Reverse Meme Search app – available on web and iOS – streamlines this process. Simply upload a meme image, and the application will provide you with the corresponding blank template.
The app also offers convenient integration with other platforms. Users can long-press on photos within apps like Reddit and Twitter, then select the Reverse app icon when prompted by iOS to share the image.
Once a template is identified, the app’s integrated photo editor allows for text addition, with customizable options for font, color, size, and placement. Notably, the application intentionally excludes the Comic Sans font.
Testing the App’s Capabilities
TechCrunch conducted tests to evaluate the app’s functionality. A Spider-Man pointing meme was successfully reversed, but a more complex “deep-fried” Owen Wilson meme initially posed a challenge.
However, Antimatter provides a “Meme Concierge” service. Within an hour of submitting the request, a response was received with the subject line, “We found your template: Owen Wilson Deep Fried Meme.”
Even individuals with formal training in visual arts and access to professional software like Adobe Photoshop may find this service valuable, particularly when dealing with heavily modified memes.
Behind the Technology
Antimatter founder Jonathan Libov remained tight-lipped regarding the app’s underlying mechanics. Is it a sophisticated reverse image search, or does it employ advanced technology to automatically remove text from images?
While the initial difficulty with the deep-fried Owen Wilson meme suggests a reverse image search approach, the addition of the template to the system ensures future users won’t require the concierge service.
Antimatter’s Vision
“We envision this app as Instapaper and Pinterest plus Figma,” Libov explained to TechCrunch. “The two key features are (A), collecting visuals – eventually extending beyond meme templates to encompass any useful and meaningful image – and (B), storing these visuals in your personal library.”
Antimatter identifies itself as a P2P learning and education company, positioning Reverse Meme Search as a component of the creative process they wished to make widely available.
The company’s website highlights its inspiration from thriving learning meme communities online.
The Significance of Memes
While perhaps not the most pressing technological challenge, the app addresses a real need given the demonstrable influence of memes. The power of memes in the modern world is undeniable, making this a worthwhile tool for digital creators.
Therefore, exploring the capabilities of reverse meme searching is a logical step for anyone actively involved in online communication.
