Stellantis Scraps Electrified Jeep Gladiator Plans

Just over a year ago, Stellantis initially announced intentions to introduce a 4xe plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Gladiator in North America before the close of 2025. However, the production of this electrified Gladiator will no longer proceed.

Shifting Product Strategy

The automaker has decided to discontinue plans for an electrified Gladiator as it re-evaluates its overall product strategy. This decision was communicated to TechCrunch via an official statement. A key factor influencing this change is the evolving preferences of consumers.

According to the statement, “The Jeep Gladiator maintains its robust styling and authentic design for the 2026 model year, incorporating significant new content directly from the factory.” It will remain the sole open-air pickup truck available, blending renowned Jeep 4x4 capabilities with practical everyday usability.

Evolving Customer Demand

Stellantis notes that as consumer preferences regarding battery-electric trucks continue to shift, the company is adjusting its product strategy. Consequently, an electrified Gladiator variant will no longer be included in the Jeep lineup.

The brand is now redirecting funding to bolster the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator. This reinvestment will facilitate the introduction of additional customer-requested factory features, expanded customization options, and alternative powertrain choices in the coming months.

Wider Trend in Electrification

The Gladiator isn't the only electrified vehicle facing cancellation. Recently, Stellantis also announced the discontinuation of development for a battery-electric full-size pickup truck under the Ram brand. This vehicle was intended to be a central component of the automaker’s U.S. product strategy, aiming to offer over 25 all-new BEVs by the end of the decade.

Low demand for full-size battery-electric trucks was cited as the primary reason for this decision. Stellantis will now focus on developing an extended-range truck, projected to achieve an estimated 690 miles of range.

Industry-Wide Adjustments

Stellantis is not alone in recalibrating its electric vehicle plans. Numerous major automakers, including Ford, GM, Mercedes, and VW Group, have previously committed substantial investments in EVs, only to later adjust their strategies.

Factors contributing to these shifts include lower-than-anticipated demand, market saturation within the luxury EV segment, and the impending expiration of the U.S. federal EV tax credit.

Focus on Affordability

Several companies are now prioritizing the development of more affordable EVs, aiming to reach a broader customer base. However, these vehicles typically offer reduced profit margins.

New Entrants and Revised Timelines

New automotive company Slate is currently developing a minimalist electric pickup truck anticipated to be priced under $30,000. Ford has postponed the launch of two next-generation electric vehicles, including a full-size electric pickup, to concentrate on smaller, more accessible models.

In August, Ford announced a $2 billion investment to transform its Louisville Assembly Plant into a facility capable of producing a new generation of affordable EVs. This includes a midsized pickup truck with a starting price of $30,000, scheduled for release in 2027.
