spotify takes on radio with its own daily morning show

Spotify’s audio streaming platform is evolving to mirror traditional radio with the introduction of “The Get Up,” the company’s inaugural daily morning program. Similar to other morning programs geared towards those traveling to work, this new offering features hosts and blends current events, popular culture, entertainment segments, and musical selections. However, Spotify distinguishes its program by tailoring the music to each individual listener’s preferences.
It’s important to note that this show isn’t broadcast live. In contrast to radio morning shows that feature live broadcasts and often incorporate listener participation—such as phone calls or competitions—Spotify’s program is pre-recorded and distributed as a playlist.
This allows listeners to access the content at their convenience, any time after its 7 a.m. EDT release on weekdays.
Furthermore, listeners have the flexibility to bypass specific segments of the program—such as the musical portions or conversational elements—if they choose. (Spotify categorizes this program as a podcast, though its structure separates the hosts’ spoken content from the individual songs. Consequently, it functions more as a diverse playlist than a conventional podcast.)
A significant difference between Spotify’s programming and a typical radio show lies in the personalized music selection. This personalization isn’t always optimal; for example, if a listener has recently been streaming older songs, their morning show will likely reflect that listening history. Currently, there is no option to customize the show’s music selection by specific genres.
The program is led by a team of three individuals: journalist Speedy Morman, formerly with Complex; Kat Lazo, a YouTuber recognized for her “The Kat Call” series; and Xavier ‘X’ Jernigan, Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships and In-House Talent.
This new playlist will be released on weekday mornings within the “Made for You” and “Driving” sections of Spotify, accessible to both free and premium users in the United States. The show can also be found directly at http://www.spotify.com/thegetup.
