Spotify Podcast Subscriptions Go Global | New Markets

Spotify Expands Podcast Subscriptions Globally
Following its initial launch in the United States, Spotify is now extending support for podcast subscriptions to creators in numerous international markets. This service empowers content creators to designate specific episodes as exclusive content for paying subscribers.
The rollout encompasses 33 new countries worldwide, significantly broadening the reach of this feature.
Changes to Subscription Pricing and Features
Upon the initial U.S. launch, Spotify implemented adjustments to the subscription service. Originally, creators were limited to three fixed price tiers for their premium podcast content.
Responding to creator feedback, Spotify has increased pricing flexibility by introducing 20 distinct price points. These range from a low of $0.49 to a maximum of $150, allowing for more tailored subscription options.
Furthermore, a feature was added enabling creators to obtain a list of their subscribers’ contact details. This facilitates direct engagement and relationship building with their audience.
Global Expansion Details
Currently, the global expansion does not introduce any novel features. The primary focus is on making podcast subscriptions accessible to a wider audience.
The service is available through Spotify’s podcast creation platform, Anchor, and is accessible on both iOS and Android devices in 29 markets today.
The remaining four markets will gain access next week.

Spotify’s Competitive Advantage
Spotify’s podcast subscription platform operates within a competitive landscape. Apple also provides a subscription service, but levies a 30% commission on creator revenue, reduced to 15% after the second year.
Spotify distinguishes itself by forgoing commissions for the initial two years. After this period, it will implement a significantly lower commission rate of just 5%.
Exclusive Partnership with Bad Robot Audio
In addition to the subscription expansion, Spotify announced a multi-year exclusive agreement with Bad Robot Audio, a new audio division of J.J. Abrams’ production company.
Bad Robot is renowned for its involvement in popular television series such as “Lost,” “Alias,” and “Westworld,” as well as blockbuster films like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
Christina Choi, a former executive from Audible and Spotify, will lead Bad Robot’s podcast division as Head of Podcasts.
While specific show details are yet to be revealed, the company plans to produce both narrative non-fiction and fictional podcast content for Spotify.
