Spotify Announces Leadership Transition: Daniel Ek Steps Down as CEO
Spotify, the leading music streaming service, announced on Tuesday a significant shift in its leadership structure.
Founder Daniel Ek will be transitioning from his role as Chief Executive Officer to become Executive Chairman before the close of the current year.
New Co-CEO Leadership
The company is implementing a co-CEO model, appointing two internal candidates to jointly lead the organization.
These appointments include Gustav Söderström, currently serving as co-president and Chief Product and Technology Officer, and Alex Norström, also a co-president and the Chief Business Officer.
Ek’s Statement on the Transition
Daniel Ek articulated that he has progressively delegated operational and strategic responsibilities to both Alex and Gustav over the past several years.
He emphasized their integral role in shaping Spotify since its inception and expressed confidence in their ability to steer the company’s future direction.
According to Ek’s statement, this restructuring primarily formalizes existing operational dynamics, aligning titles with current practices.
As Executive Chairman, Ek intends to concentrate on the company’s long-term vision and maintain close collaboration with the Board of Directors and the newly appointed co-CEOs.
Profitability and Ek’s Other Ventures
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Ek revealed that Spotify has maintained profitability for more than a year.
Having founded Spotify in 2006, Ek’s departure marks a substantial change in the company’s leadership.
Beyond Spotify, Ek is also involved in other ventures.
In 2018, he co-founded Neko, a health technology startup specializing in body scanning, which recently secured $260 million in Series B funding, achieving a post-money valuation of $1.8 billion.
Furthermore, Ek established Prima Materia, an investment firm, in 2021 in partnership with Shakil Khan, a prominent Spotify investor.
