Spotify Wrapped 2020: New Features & How to See Yours

Spotify is releasing its 2020 Wrapped experience today, offering users a personalized recap of their listening activity throughout the year – including favorite musicians, tracks, genres, and podcasts. This iteration of Wrapped introduces several new elements. Specifically, the Wrapped experience will be available exclusively on mobile devices for Spotify subscribers, while a web-based version will be offered to non-subscribers for the first time. Reflecting the platform’s increased focus on podcasts, Wrapped will now provide a more comprehensive analysis of users’ podcast consumption. Furthermore, new features such as interactive in-app quizzes, a “Story of Your 2020” centered around each user’s most-played song, new Wrapped badges, curated playlists, expanded social sharing customization, and other enhancements are included.
The feature is being deployed within the Spotify mobile application for both iOS and Android devices across all global markets, delivering personalized year-end insights to users. Individuals who do not currently use Spotify will be able to experience a portion of Wrapped through a dedicated web page, where Spotify will share broader, worldwide listening statistics, such as the most streamed artist, the top three podcasts, and other popular music trends.
Spotify previously revealed some of these trends on Tuesday, highlighting that Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny topped the charts with over 8.3 billion streams in 2020. The three most popular podcasts were identified as The Joe Rogan Experience, TED Talks Daily, and The Daily. This year’s Wrapped provides a more detailed look at podcast listening habits. While podcast insights were previously included, the 2020 version expands on this with additional data points, such as the total number of minutes users spent listening to podcasts and identification of the most frequently “binge-listened” podcasts.
A new in-app quiz feature allows users to test their knowledge before the Wrapped trends are revealed. These quizzes will challenge Spotify listeners to identify their top podcasts, favorite artists, and even the decade from which they streamed the most music. Users will also discover new genres they explored throughout the year.
Stories are also incorporated into this year’s Wrapped experience. The company had been testing a Stories feature within its app – building on earlier tests with Storylines and further development that began in January 2020, which initially allowed influencers to share Stories to promote their playlists. These influencers now also include musicians, according to recent testing.Spotify is introducing “Story of Your 2020” within Wrapped, which visually depicts a user’s top song of the year, from its initial play to its 100th play, and highlights key listening milestones.
Premium subscribers will unlock new badges this year based on their listening behaviors. The “Tastemaker” badge will be awarded to users whose playlists attract followers, while the “Pioneer” badge recognizes those who listen to songs before they reach 50,000 streams. The “Collector” badge will be given to users who added a significant number of songs to their playlists during the year.
Alongside Wrapped, users will receive access to three new, personalized playlists. “Your Top Songs” features a user’s most-played tracks from the year. “Missed Hits” recommends popular 2020 songs that the user didn’t listen to, but Spotify believes they would enjoy. And for listeners in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, a third playlist called “On Record” offers a mixed-media experience showcasing users’ top artists of 2020.As in previous years, sharing Wrapped results on social media is a key component. This year, users can personalize their sharing card by selecting one of four available color schemes before posting it to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter.
2020 Wrapped is available today on iOS and Android. Later today, Spotify will also launch its Wrapped creator experience for both podcasters and artists.
