Spotify Car Thing: Expanded Access to In-Car Device

Spotify Expands Availability of “Car Thing”
The in-car entertainment system developed by Spotify, simply named “Car Thing,” which initially launched this spring with limited access through invitations, is now becoming more widely available to the public. The company announced today that U.S. customers can now purchase the device for $79.99.
Previously, during its initial testing phase, Spotify offered the product at only the cost of shipping. This approach was taken as it represented Spotify’s first venture into hardware development, and the company prioritized ensuring a successful launch.
Waitlist and Subscription Requirements
Spotify is now offering purchase access to U.S. users who previously registered on the Car Thing waitlist. Furthermore, any Spotify user, regardless of whether they have a free or Premium account, can join the waitlist to secure a future purchase opportunity.
A Spotify Premium subscription – encompassing Individual, Family, or Student plans – is required to operate the device. A smartphone connection for mobile data is also necessary. However, signing up for the waitlist does not currently necessitate a paid subscription.
Device Features and Design
The Car Thing is a lightweight music and podcast player, weighing just 3.4 oz. and measuring 4.6″ x 2.5″ x 0.7″. It combines voice control functionality with physical knobs, buttons, and a touchscreen display for intuitive menu navigation and media selection.
Through this device, users gain access to Spotify’s complete library of music and podcasts while driving.
The primary intention behind Car Thing is to provide a convenient solution for vehicle owners who lack integrated infotainment systems such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, enabling easier access to Spotify’s personalized listening features.
Mounting and Interface
The device can be securely mounted within the car using various mounts included with the product. A car charger and USB-C cable are also provided.
The main interface incorporates four customizable preset buttons for quick access to frequently enjoyed content. These are pre-configured with Liked Songs and Spotify’s Daily Drive and Morning Commute playlists, with one slot remaining available for user customization.
Voice Control and Data Privacy
Users can interact with Car Thing using voice commands initiated with “Hey Spotify.” The device utilizes four integrated microphones to capture these commands.
Spotify’s current data privacy policy details that recordings and transcripts of voice interactions, along with associated content information, are collected. This data may be utilized to refine and enhance the voice command feature over time.
Software Updates and Future Development
Since its initial limited release, Spotify has already implemented several software updates to improve the Car Thing user experience. The company has committed to ongoing software improvements as the device becomes available to a broader audience.
Spotify has not disclosed the total number of Car Thing devices shipped to date.
