Spotify Apple Watch App Now Supports Standalone Streaming

Spotify has officially announced the implementation of independent streaming functionality within its Apple Watch application. This feature was initially observed during testing in September and becomes available approximately two years following the introduction of Spotify's dedicated app for the Apple Watch.
The addition of standalone streaming allows subscribers to enjoy Spotify music and podcasts utilizing a Wi-Fi network or cellular data connection, eliminating the requirement for a paired iPhone.
The absence of independent streaming capabilities had been a significant concern for a segment of Spotify’s user base. This was particularly noticeable for individuals who prefer to exercise without carrying their iPhone – such as during a running session – or in any situation where having a phone is inconvenient.
Now, with standalone streaming enabled, Spotify listeners can stream content directly from their watch to their Bluetooth headphones or AirPods.
Currently, the feature is still identified with a beta designation for some users within the application.
The update to the Spotify application was first reported by 9to5Mac in the United States, with the publication noting that an increasing number of users were gaining access to the feature, even if they hadn’t participated in the earlier September testing phase.Spotify is not the first music platform to provide a standalone streaming experience on the Apple Watch. Apple Music, as well as Pandora, had already introduced this functionality, with Pandora enabling it as early as February 2020.
However, Spotify is offering this capability before YouTube Music. While YouTube recently released an Apple Watch version of its music streaming service in mid-October, it functions primarily as a remote control for the YouTube Music application.
Spotify verified the launch through a statement provided to TechCrunch, although a public announcement regarding the update has not yet been made.
According to a Spotify representative, “Our focus is on creating experiences that allow users to listen to Spotify anywhere and at any time – regardless of the device or platform.” They further stated, “Following an initial testing phase, we are now deploying streaming functionality for Spotify on the Apple Watch.”
The company also confirmed that the rollout is occurring on a worldwide scale.
To stream Spotify directly from your Apple Watch, a model Series 3 or newer is required, running watchOS 6.0 or later (version 7.1 or higher is recommended), along with either a cellular connection or access to a Wi-Fi network, as detailed on the Spotify website.
