splunk acquires plumbr and rigor to build out its observability platform

Splunk, a leading data platform, revealed today the addition of two companies – Plumbr and Rigor – to its growing portfolio, coinciding with the debut of its new Observability Suite. Plumbr delivers application performance monitoring services, while Rigor specializes in digital experience monitoring, utilizing synthetic monitoring and optimization technologies to assist organizations in enhancing their user experiences. These latest acquisitions build upon the technology and expertise Splunk gained through its acquisition of SignalFx last year for a sum exceeding $1 billion.

The financial details of these acquisitions were not disclosed by Splunk. However, Plumbr, headquartered in Estonia, had previously secured approximately $1.8 million in funding, and Rigor, based in Atlanta, completed a debt financing round earlier this year.

Splunk’s purchase of SignalFx was driven by a desire to establish itself as a prominent player in the observability and APM sectors. According to Splunk CTO Tim Tully, these current acquisitions are intended to expedite that progress.

“As a significant number of our users and customers rapidly transition to cloud environments, the methods they employ to monitor their applications have evolved, particularly with the widespread adoption of serverless and microservices architectures,” Tully stated. “We entered this area with prior acquisitions, and these two additions further broaden our comprehensive offerings.”

Tully emphasized Splunk’s particular interest in Plumbr’s bytecode implementation and its capabilities in real-user monitoring, as well as Rigor’s synthetic monitoring features for digital experience monitoring (DEM). “Integrating these two components into our portfolio provides a robust suite of solutions, as DEM was a crucial element missing from our APM strategy,” Tully clarified.

The launch of the Observability Suite marks Splunk’s consolidation of these various capabilities into a unified product, distinguished by a fresh design that differentiates it from Splunk’s other tools. This suite integrates logs, metrics, traces, digital experience data, user monitoring, synthetics, and more.

“At Yelp, our engineering teams manage hundreds of distinct microservices, all focused on assisting users in discovering and connecting with exceptional local businesses,” explained Chris Gordon, Technical Lead at Yelp, whose team has been evaluating the new suite. “Our Production Observability team works closely with Engineering to improve insight into the performance of critical services and infrastructure. Splunk provides us with the tools to empower engineers to independently monitor their services during rapid code deployments, while also granting the observability team centralized control and visibility to ensure efficient utilization of our monitoring resources.”
