Marcelo Claure: SoftBank Executive to Make Waves Next Week

SoftBank's Expanding Investments in Latin America
SoftBank has demonstrated significant investment activity within Latin America. The Japanese investment firm recently announced the launch of its second fund specifically targeting the region, backed by a $3 billion commitment from the company itself. Further capital raises are being explored to potentially increase the fund’s size.
Initial Fund and Investment Performance
This new vehicle builds upon the success of SoftBank’s first Latin America-focused fund, which was established in March 2019 with an initial $2 billion in committed capital. The firm’s investment strategy in the region has proven highly successful.
Team and Portfolio Growth
Under the leadership of Marcelo Claure, CEO of SoftBank Group International and COO of SoftBank Group Corp., a team of approximately four dozen employees—based in Miami, São Paulo, and Mexico City—have been instrumental in identifying and funding promising startups. To date, SoftBank has invested $3.5 billion in 48 startups, achieving a reported net IRR of 85% (on paper).
Notable Portfolio Companies
Several companies within SoftBank’s portfolio have achieved unicorn status, or a valuation exceeding $1 billion. These include QuintoAndar, Rappi, Mercado Bitcoin, Gympass, and MadeiraMadeira. Recently, the firm also participated in a $350 million Series D funding round for Ualá, an Argentine personal finance application.
Expansion of the Investment Team
To manage the increasing volume of investment opportunities, two new managing partners were added to the team at the end of the previous week.
Marcelo Claure's Multifaceted Role
Despite overseeing Latin American investments, Marcelo Claure holds numerous responsibilities within SoftBank. He manages a diverse portfolio of operating companies, including Arm, Brightstar, Fortress, SB Energy, and Boston Dynamics. He also oversees SoftBank’s stake in T-Mobile US and serves as executive chairman of WeWork.
