Snapchat Updates Creator Payouts with Spotlight Challenges

Snapchat Enhances Creator Monetization with New Tools and Programs

In response to increasing competition for content creators, Snap has unveiled a suite of new tools, programs, and features designed to empower creators on its platform to generate income. These advancements include a global rollout of the Gifting feature, expansion of the Creator Marketplace to encompass Snap Stars (verified top creators), and the introduction of the Creator Hub – a comprehensive resource for creators.

Spotlight Challenges: A New Incentive Structure

A key component of this update is the launch of Spotlight Challenges, a novel approach to rewarding creators for short-form video content on Snapchat’s TikTok competitor, Spotlight. These challenges will offer cash prizes to creators who produce top-performing content, as determined by Snap.

This differs significantly from creator funds offered by other social media platforms. Unlike those funds, which distribute payments based on views and engagement to qualifying creators, Spotlight Challenges present a “chance” to win. Each challenge will typically reward 3 to 5 creators, though the number may vary. The minimum prize amount is set at $250.

Individual challenge prize pools will generally range from $1,000 to $25,000, with the possibility of larger sums being offered occasionally. The challenges are specifically designed to promote the utilization of particular Lenses, Sounds, or #Topics.

Accessing and Participating in Spotlight Challenges

These challenges will be prominently featured on Spotlight’s “Trending” page, accessible via the trending up icon within the Snapchat app. Users can view available challenges, review submission guidelines and prize details, and then directly create content from within the camera interface.

The introduction of Spotlight Challenges follows feedback from Snap creators who previously expressed concerns regarding payment delays and diminishing earnings. Snap had initially allocated $1 million daily to support Spotlight, but reduced this to “millions” per month in June.

A Competitive Landscape for Creators

Creators who anticipated continued high payouts were dissatisfied with this change, prompting some to explore opportunities on alternative platforms. Currently, numerous options exist, as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter are all actively seeking to attract creators through various means, including direct payments and revenue sharing.

Snap’s new challenge system offers increased transparency regarding potential payouts, allowing creators to view prize amounts in advance. However, it also emphasizes that earnings are not guaranteed, as participation represents a “prize” opportunity rather than a consistent paycheck.

Snap assures TechCrunch that these prizes are supplemental to existing creator payouts, and will not replace the millions distributed monthly to top Spotlight creators.

The rollout of this feature will begin in the U.S. next month on both iOS and Android, with plans for subsequent expansion to additional markets.

Additional Creator Resources and Opportunities

Alongside Spotlight Challenges, Snap is launching a Snapchat Creator Hub, providing guidance on getting started with Spotlight and offering valuable tips. The Gifting feature, which allows fans to support creators using Snap Tokens through Story Replies, is also being extended to Snap Stars globally.

The Creator Marketplace is also undergoing expansion. Initially focused on connecting Lens creators and developers with businesses seeking AR advertising solutions, it will now also facilitate connections between businesses and Snap Stars for brand collaborations.

This expansion mirrors the functionality of creator marketplaces on other major social platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

To enhance transparency, Snap is introducing a “Sponsored by” tag for businesses with Public Profiles, enabling Snap Stars to clearly identify sponsored content. In these instances, 100% of the transaction revenue will be directed to the creators.

Spotlight Growth and Creator Payouts

Despite adjustments to its earlier monetization strategies, Snap reports significant growth in Spotlight content creation. During its second-quarter earnings call, the company announced that Spotlight submissions had more than tripled, daily time spent per user in the U.S. increased by over 60% from the previous quarter, and daily active users rose by 49%.

To date, Snap has distributed over $130 million to creators. Furthermore, the company has observed “all-time highs” in the number of creators posting to Spotlight since the June 1 revamp.
