snap acquires location data startup streetcred

Snap, the parent organization of Snapchat, has completed the purchase of StreetCred, a New York City-based company focused on developing a location data platform.
Snap verified the acquisition with TechCrunch, stating that four members of the StreetCred team – including its co-founders, Randy Meech and Diana Shkolnikov – will now be part of Snap, contributing to the development of map and location-focused features.
A key element of Snap’s overall approach is the Snap Map, a feature enabling users to see publicly shared snaps from specific areas and share their own locations with their contacts. Last year, the Snap Map was prominently featured in Snapchat’s primary navigation, and the company reported it was being used by 200 million users monthly.
Concurrently, Snapchat has been introducing additional features connected to user locations, such as Local Lenses, which empower developers to design augmented reality lenses tailored to particular geographic areas and interacting with real-world places.
Meech and Shkolnikov are expected to contribute significant expertise in mapping technologies to Snap. Meech previously served as CEO of Mapzen, Samsung’s open mapping division, and held the position of senior vice president of local and mapping products at AOL (later known as Verizon Media). Shkolnikov formerly held the role of engineering director at Mapzen.
StreetCred had previously secured $1 million in seed funding from Bowery Capital and Notation Capital. In a 2018 conversation, Meech articulated his vision to “open and decentralize” location data through the creation of a blockchain-based marketplace where individuals would be incentivized for contributing to data collection.
Although the specifics of the acquisition’s financial arrangements haven’t been revealed, the current StreetCred platform will be discontinued as a result of the agreement.
