Slice Introduces New POS System and Rewards Program for Pizzerias

Slice, the prominent online ordering platform catering to independent pizzerias, unveiled two significant additions today. These include a point-of-sale (POS) system tailored for these businesses, alongside a customer rewards initiative.

New Slice Register POS System

The introduction of Slice Register follows last year’s acquisition of Instore, a POS company, and the subsequent appointment of Instore’s former CEO, Matt Niehaus, as Slice’s senior vice president of payments.

While a POS system focused solely on pizzerias may appear niche, Niehaus highlighted that a substantial portion of the 15,000 pizzerias within Slice’s network still utilize traditional cash registers and manual record-keeping. He noted that pizzeria owners excel at pizza creation but often lack expertise in accounting procedures.

Existing POS solutions, according to Niehaus, are not optimally designed to accommodate the specific requirements and operational flows of a pizzeria. Slice’s founder and CEO, Ilir Sela, further explained that many current systems were initially developed for in-person ordering, with online capabilities added as an afterthought.

Currently, the average local pizzeria receives approximately 19% of its orders online, a stark contrast to the 75% observed at typical Domino’s locations. This statistic led Niehaus to assert that Domino’s represents the primary competitive force, rather than other POS companies.

It seamlessly integrates with Slice’s existing online ordering platform and provides support for email and mobile marketing efforts.

Furthermore, the system offers a unified view of each customer’s data. Niehaus stated that a key objective is to consolidate customer interactions onto a single platform and encourage online ordering.

Pizzerias can access Slice Register without any upfront costs for either the hardware or the software. In 2021, the only charge will be for payment processing, with details regarding future pricing to be announced next year.

Slice Rewards Program for Diners

The newly launched Slice Rewards program allows customers who place orders through Slice to earn a complimentary large cheese pizza after completing eight orders totaling $15 or more. Slice will directly cover the cost of these free pizzas.

Sela characterized this program as being similar to Domino’s rewards system, but with the advantage of being applicable across a network of independent pizzerias.

“Our research indicates that local consumers typically have several favorite pizzerias, often valuing them equally,” Sela explained. “The program allows customers to be rewarded for their patronage at all of their preferred local establishments.”
