SiriusXM Hires Disney+ Exec as New Head of Product & Technology

Sirius XM Appoints New Product and Technology Leader
Sirius XM, the provider of satellite radio and the Pandora streaming music application, has announced the appointment of a new head of product and technology. This strategic move signals the company’s intention to broaden its reach beyond in-car entertainment and enhance its competitive standing against prominent streaming services such as Spotify.
Executive Appointment Details
The company revealed this morning the hiring of Joseph Inzerillo, a former executive from both MLB and Disney, as its new Chief Product and Technology Officer. His tenure will officially commence on January 10, 2022.
Jim Cady, currently the Chief Innovation Officer at Sirius XM and serving as interim head of Product Development, will be retiring after an eight-year commitment to the organization. He will collaborate with Inzerillo during a transition period extending through February 2022.
Inzerillo’s Background and Experience
Prior to joining Sirius XM, Inzerillo held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Disney’s streaming division. He was responsible for overseeing all facets of the business, encompassing streaming operations, commerce, platform development, and global expansion strategies for Disney+, ESPN+, Star+, and Hulu.
Inzerillo initially joined Disney in 2017 following the acquisition of BAMTech Media, where he previously served as EVP and Chief Technology Officer.
Before his time at Disney, Inzerillo was the Chief Technology Officer for Major League Baseball, including MLB Advanced Media and MLB Network. During his leadership, he launched MLB.tv, the pioneering over-the-top sports service, alongside innovations like “instant replay” and wireless connectivity in all 30 ballparks. He also played a key role in establishing BAMTech Media, MLB’s streaming technology platform.
The BAMTech Platform’s Influence
The BAMTech platform, while not widely recognized by consumers, has been instrumental in powering several major streaming services. These include HBO Now, WWE Network, Eurosport Player, Fox Sports, and the NHL.
Responsibilities and Team Leadership
In his new role at Sirius XM, the executive will oversee the company’s Information Technology and Broadcast Infrastructure, as well as the teams responsible for building and maintaining these platforms. He will lead a substantial team of over 1,500 engineers and product specialists across Sirius XM, Pandora, and Stitcher.
Inzerillo will also be responsible for shaping Sirius XM’s product roadmap, satellite infrastructure, and overall technology vision and innovation. He will report directly to Jennifer Witz, the CEO of Sirius XM.
Strategic Importance and Market Performance
This appointment is considered a significant achievement for Sirius XM, which has faced challenges in maintaining consumer engagement relative to competitors like Spotify. Despite recent positive earnings reports, the company’s stock has experienced a 3% decline over the past five years, contrasting with Spotify’s 120% gain during the same period.
In the most recent quarter, Sirius XM reported a 9% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching $2.2 billion, and a record 616,000 net new self-pay subscribers to its satellite radio service. The total subscriber base stood at 34.1 million at the end of Q3, a slight decrease from 34.3 million in the same quarter of the previous year, but the company anticipates its largest subscriber growth since 2018 in Q4.
Challenges and Industry Shifts
A considerable portion of Sirius XM’s business relies on partnerships with automakers and pre-installation of its service in vehicles. However, the shift towards remote work and the increasing prevalence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations, which allow users to access their preferred streaming apps, present potential long-term challenges to satellite radio’s appeal.
The company’s 2018 acquisition of Pandora for $3.5 billion has not yielded the anticipated results. The streaming app has experienced a decline in user engagement, with monthly active users decreasing from 58.6 million a year ago to 52.6 million in Q3, down from 55.1 million in Q2.
Sirius XM has also invested in podcasting through the acquisition of Stitcher for $325 million and Simplecast for analytics and distribution. Furthermore, the company has explored initiatives like Pandora’s new SoundCloud station and a partnership with TikTok to broaden its consumer reach.
Potential for Innovation
Inzerillo’s arrival is expected to catalyze innovation within the company, enabling it to more effectively leverage its existing products and services.
Statements from Key Personnel
“I am a long-time listener and huge fan of SiriusXM, and I could not be more excited to join this team,” stated Inzerillo. “Streaming and over-the-top offerings have revolutionized the entertainment industry – and audio is no exception. This opportunity is the culmination of all of my professional experiences over the last 30 years, and one I simply could not pass up. From the moment I accepted the role, my mind has been racing with ideas for how we can expand digital capabilities across SiriusXM’s business. Together, our team will develop a product and technology roadmap that will further differentiate SiriusXM and bring creative new entertainment options to consumers at scale.”
CEO Jennifer Witz also commended Inzerillo’s extensive 30 years of experience in digital media and indicated forthcoming product updates in a staff memo.
