Throughout the next couple of weeks, TC will be evaluating a variety of headphones as part of our “Headphone Week” coverage, and today’s focus is the Shure SRH1540, which retails for $499. While not a recent release, these headphones have consistently been a favored choice for audio enthusiasts within their price bracket for quite some time. This enduring popularity stems from their exceptional audio performance, strong value proposition, and remarkable comfort for extended use.

The basics

The Shure SRH1540 headphones are closed-back models designed to deliver exceptional audio performance. They are ideal for both dedicated audiophiles and professionals who routinely work with sound, such as audio engineers and podcast creators. These headphones achieve a soundstage remarkably similar to that of open-back designs, while effectively minimizing sound leakage – a significant benefit in shared workspaces like home offices.

The package includes a dual cable setup, along with an additional pair of ear pads covered in Alcantara fabric. A robust, hard-shell plastic carrying case is also provided, alongside a threaded adapter enabling compatibility with 6.3mm audio jacks (the standard cable terminates in a 3.5mm connector).

Shure prioritized both comfort and build quality in the SRH1450’s construction. These headphones are remarkably light in weight, yet this doesn’t indicate a compromise in materials. The frame incorporates aircraft-grade aluminum and carbon fiber, maximizing durability while minimizing strain during extended use.

These connectors are color-coded to simplify correct positioning, and the cable itself is reinforced with Kevlar for enhanced longevity. A second cable is also included as a backup.

In terms of audio performance, these headphones deliver exceptional sound that will satisfy even critical listeners, particularly when used with a DAC or USB audio interface, such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which I primarily used for testing. They offer a remarkable degree of clarity and nuance, alongside impactful bass that remains balanced and doesn’t obscure the overall soundstage. Having consistently preferred open-back headphones for audio editing and everyday listening, the SRH1450 has changed my preference.

In conclusion

These headphones represent a fantastic option for individuals seeking to invest in a quality listening experience without exceeding a substantial budget within the high-end audio market. They deliver excellent audio performance coupled with robust construction and extended wearing comfort. It’s worth noting, however, that they don’t provide significant noise isolation, although their performance is superior to that of fully open-back designs.
