Bird Expands Consumer Vehicle Lineup with New Scooters

Bird, the micromobility provider that recently became publicly traded through a SPAC merger, has introduced two new scooters for direct consumer purchase. These additions, the Bird Flex and the Birdie Glow, broaden the company’s offerings in the personal micromobility market.

Introducing the Bird Flex and Birdie Glow

The Bird Flex, a foldable electric scooter priced at $599, caters to older riders. Meanwhile, the Birdie Glow, a three-wheeled scooter designed for children, is available for $99.

These new vehicles join the Bird Bike, launched in August, as part of the company’s direct-to-consumer sales strategy. Currently, sales are limited to the United States, though Bird intends to expand into European markets next year.

Growth in Hardware Sales

Although vehicle sales currently represent a small portion of Bird’s overall revenue – 2.1% in Q3 – the company is actively developing its hardware sales division. This move aligns with a growing trend in personal micromobility vehicle adoption.

Recent research from McKinsey indicates strong consumer interest, with 70% of survey participants expressing willingness to use micromobility options for commuting.

Bird has not disclosed specific sales figures or revenue projections for its retail products at this time.

Bird Flex: Specifications and Features

The Bird Flex is designed for riders aged 16 and up and builds upon the foundation of the original Bird Air scooter. The pricing remains consistent between the two models.

However, the Flex offers a slightly reduced top speed of 15 mph compared to the Air’s 16 mph, and a range of 15 miles versus the Air’s 16 miles. A company spokesperson noted a marginally larger battery within the Flex model.

Key specifications of the Bird Flex include:

  • Street-tested front-wheel suspension
  • A 350W brushless Hall motor
  • A wider base and extended platform
  • 10-inch diameter puncture-proof tires
  • An integrated LED display for speed and battery monitoring

The Bird Flex is foldable and weighs under 50 pounds.

Birdie Glow: A Fun Ride for Kids

The Birdie Glow is an updated version of the original Birdie scooter, released in 2019. The primary difference is the addition of light-up wheels, enhancing visibility and appeal for children.

This non-electric scooter is intended for children aged three to eight and will initially be available in Electric Rose, with additional colors – Sky Blue, Twilight, and Jet Black – becoming available soon.
