Automatically Expand Navigation Pane Tree in Windows 7

Windows 7 Navigation Pane Behavior

Within the Windows 7 operating system, a specific behavior exists regarding folder navigation. When folders located in the right pane of Windows Explorer are opened via a double-click or the Enter key, the folder tree present in the left pane, also known as the navigation pane, does not automatically adjust to reflect your current location.

By its default configuration, the navigation pane remains fixed at its highest level during navigation through folders using the right pane. Manual expansion of the navigation pane tree is therefore required to visualize the current path. Earlier Windows versions, such as Vista and XP, functioned differently, automatically expanding the folder tree to correspond with the folder opened in the right pane.

Modifying the Navigation Pane Settings

However, this behavior in Windows 7 is configurable. It is simply disabled by default. To enable automatic expansion, begin by opening Windows Explorer.

From within Windows Explorer, access the Folder and Search Options through the Organize menu.

Alternatively, you can revert to the classic navigation tree structure utilized in Windows Vista and XP. This is achieved through a separate option within the same dialog box.

To display the classic tree, which begins with Desktop and includes additional elements, select the “Show all folders” checkbox in the Navigation pane section of the Folder Options dialog box. Confirm your changes and close the dialog by clicking OK.
