Segway Introduces New E-Bikes at CES 2025
Segway, a leading innovator in micromobility, unveiled two novel e-bikes at CES 2025. These new models are engineered to enhance the cycling experience, prioritizing ease of use, safety, convenience, and broader accessibility.
Introducing the Xyber and Xafari
Currently available for pre-order, with shipments anticipated in February, are the Xyber and Xafari e-bikes. Segway describes the Xyber as embodying a dirt bike aesthetic, while the Xafari presents a more traditional bicycle design.
Shared Intelligent Features
Despite their differing styles, both the Xyber and Xafari incorporate Segway’s Intelligent Ride System. This comprehensive system integrates a suite of advanced technologies and features.
- AirLock: This feature provides automatic security, preventing unauthorized use and activating an alarm upon tampering.
- Location Tracking: Both Apple Find My integration and Segway GPS are included for enhanced tracking capabilities.
- Adaptive Pedal Assist: The bikes offer a pedal assist system that dynamically adjusts to the rider’s needs.
- Intelligent Lighting: An advanced lighting system is incorporated for improved visibility and safety.
- Health & Fitness Syncing: Data related to health and fitness can be seamlessly synchronized.
- IOT Connectivity: Over-the-air updates and remote control functionality are enabled through IOT integration and a dedicated mobile application.
- Smart TFT Display: A smart display automatically adjusts its brightness to ensure optimal visibility in all conditions.
These shared features demonstrate Segway’s commitment to providing a technologically advanced and user-friendly experience across its new e-bike lineup. The Intelligent Ride System aims to redefine the standards for e-bike functionality and security.
Segway’s Xyber: A Unique E-Ride with Motorcycle Influences
Segway characterizes its Xyber model as falling outside of conventional classifications. Notably, this e-bike isn't currently approved for street use. The company designates the Xyber as “unclassified,” explicitly stating it’s not designed for operation on public roads or designated bike lanes.
This designation stems from the bike’s substantial performance capabilities. The Xyber boasts a maximum torque of up to 175 Nm, a peak power output reaching 6,000 watts, and a maximum speed of 35 mph when equipped with a dual-battery setup.
Priced at $2,999.99, the Xyber offers riders three distinct throttle modes: Eco, Sport, and Race. In Race mode, acceleration from 0 to 20 mph is achieved in a swift 2.7 seconds.
The bike’s range extends to 112 miles on a single charge, facilitated by its 20 x 5-inch fat tires. Despite its aesthetic resemblance to a dirt bike or motorcycle, the Xyber retains functional pedals and provides 12 varying levels of pedal assistance.
Future Road-Legal Version Planned
Segway has announced plans to release a street-legal version of the Xyber later this year, anticipated in either spring or summer. This forthcoming model will adhere to federal Class 2 e-bike standards.
The road-compliant version will also incorporate enhanced safety features specifically designed for on-road operation, ensuring compliance and rider security.
- Maximum Torque: Up to 175 Nm
- Peak Power: Up to 6,000 watts
- Top Speed: 35 mph (dual-battery configuration)
- Acceleration (0-20 mph): 2.7 seconds (Race mode)
- Range: 112 miles
The Xyber represents a bold step in e-bike design, blending high performance with a distinctive, moto-inspired style. Its initial “unclassified” status highlights its powerful capabilities, while the planned road-legal version promises broader accessibility.
Segway’s Xafari: An Accessible E-Bike for a Wide Range of Users
Priced at $2,399.99, the Segway Xafari presents a contemporary step-through cruiser design. It’s engineered to perform well on diverse terrains and accommodate riders of varying sizes.A key feature is its adjustability. The seat height, stem, handlebars, and display can all be easily modified, ensuring a comfortable fit for individuals between 5’1” and 6’2”.
The Xafari prioritizes rider comfort through its advanced suspension system. This system includes adjustable preload and compression damping, alongside a lockout feature on the fork for a smoother experience.Further enhancing comfort, the bike is equipped with 26 x 3-inch tires, providing additional support and stability during rides.
A 936 Wh battery is integrated seamlessly into the stem. This battery is removable, allowing for convenient indoor charging.
The bike’s intelligent battery management system contributes to an impressive range of up to 88 miles on a single charge. A USB port is also included, enabling riders to charge their mobile devices while on the go.
An integrated smart display offers features like navigation, range information, and music control, potentially reducing the need for a separate smartphone.
Designed with practicality in mind, the Xafari includes a rear-mounted rack. It also features both hardshell and softshell bags integrated into the frame, providing ample storage for errands and commutes.
