How To Schedule Recording A Radio Station

Automating Radio Show Recordings

Previously, we discussed the process of capturing online radio streams. However, simply recording shows isn't always sufficient for listeners.

When a desired program airs during times of conflicting commitments, locating it later often requires searching through a station's website archives – assuming such archives even exist.

Scheduling Recordings: A Comprehensive Guide

This guide details how to automate the recording process on both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems.

The methods outlined here are applicable to both online radio streams and traditional FM/AM broadcasts.

Platform-Specific Instructions

The following outlines the steps for scheduling recordings on different operating systems.

  • Mac OS X: Utilize the built-in Automator application to create a scheduled task.
  • Windows: Employ the Task Scheduler to automate the recording process.

Benefits of Scheduled Recording

Automated recording offers several advantages for radio enthusiasts.

  • Convenience: Capture shows without needing to be present during the broadcast.
  • Preservation: Ensure access to favorite programs even if archives are unavailable.
  • Flexibility: Listen to content at your own pace and convenience.

By implementing these techniques, you can reliably record and enjoy radio content on your terms.

This ensures you never miss a program, regardless of scheduling conflicts or archive limitations.

Internet Radio

Currently, internet radio stations are widely accessible, though they haven't yet surpassed the popularity of traditional analog radio. However, a convenient solution exists as most established radio stations – and particularly those with significant listenership – provide an internet stream on their website as a complement to their regular broadcasts.

Windows - Radio & MP3 Player

To begin, the URL of the desired internet radio station is required. If the URL isn’t readily available, it may be located within the page’s source code. Alternatively, the radio station can be played in the background while utilizing the analog recording method described later.

For Windows users, a useful tool named Radio & MP3 Player is available. This application provides all the necessary features for scheduling recordings. Install the software on your computer and then add the URL(s) of your preferred internet radio station(s) by navigating to Show My Stations -> Add.

Subsequently, select File from the menu and then choose Show Schedule Recordings. This will display a list of all currently scheduled recordings. If the application is newly installed, this list will initially be empty.

Click the Add New button to create a new recording schedule.

A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to name the recording and select the radio station. Below this, you can define the recording timeframe and configure recurring recordings if desired. Recordings are saved as MP3 files by default to the folder specified at the bottom of the window.

Mac OS X - Radio Recorder [No Longer Available]

Finding a comparable application for Mac OS X can be challenging, especially when seeking a free option. Radio Recorder previously offered a viable solution. However, its last release was in early 2005, designed for PowerPC architecture. The developer’s website is no longer active, and the application is unsupported.

Configuration of Radio Recorder can be completed directly within the main application window. Simply input the station URL, assign a name, and define the recording time window. Like Radio & MP3 Player, scheduled recordings can be set to repeat. Additional tabs within the application allow for automatic song splitting and radio tagging. Activate the timer by pressing the Now button.

For a currently supported, commercial alternative, consider Radioshift, which is available for $32 as of this writing.

Analog Radio Recording with Audacity 1.3 and Later

This guide details how to record analog radio broadcasts using Audacity, version 1.3 or a more recent iteration. The process differs depending on whether you're capturing audio directly from your computer or recording from a physical radio.

Windows Configuration

The setup procedure varies slightly depending on your operating system. Below are instructions for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Mac OS X Setup

If your intention is solely to capture audio emanating from your computer, such as a radio station streaming in the background, this initial step can be bypassed. However, recording actual analog radio transmissions necessitates either a PCI Radio Tuner or utilizing your computer’s microphone input.

A PCI Radio Tuner represents a hardware component installed within your PC. It is frequently bundled with PCI TV Tuner cards. Certain PCs marketed as media centers may include this tuner as a standard feature. This allows for FM/AM radio reception through a software application on your computer. Ensure the tuner’s accompanying software is properly installed.

Should your computer lack an internal radio tuner, a conventional radio can be connected. A radio equipped with an AUX or Line-Out port, coupled with a 2x 3.5mm TRS jack cable, is required. This cable, featuring plugs similar to those used with MP3 players or computers, will connect to your computer’s microphone input.

Audacity version 1.3 or newer is essential for scheduled recording functionality. Downloads are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/Unix operating systems. Selecting the correct version is crucial, as scheduling capabilities were introduced with the 1.3 Beta release.

Within the main Audacity application window, you must select your desired audio input source. When recording audio playing on your computer, choose the Internal Microphone option. For external sources, select your appropriate audio card.

To initiate a scheduled recording, navigate to Transport -> Timer Record... Here, you can define the start and end times for the recording. Note that recurring recordings are not supported; each recording session must be configured individually.

Confirm your settings by pressing OK to activate the timer. The recording will commence at the designated time.
