Sarah Tavel Transitions to Venture Partner at Benchmark

Sarah Tavel Shifts Role at Benchmark Venture Firm

After eight years with Benchmark, including a historic appointment as the firm’s inaugural female general partner, Sarah Tavel has revealed a transition to a venture partner position via X.

This new role will allow Tavel to maintain investment activities and board memberships with current portfolio companies. Simultaneously, it will provide dedicated time for exploration of “AI tools at the edge” and thoughtful consideration of the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

Tavel’s Background and Experience

Tavel initially joined Benchmark in 2017, bringing with her a strong track record. Prior to this, she spent a year and a half as a partner at Greylock.

Her experience also includes three years as a product manager at Pinterest. Before Pinterest, Tavel honed her investment skills at Bessemer Venture Partners, where she played a role in identifying early opportunities in companies like Pinterest and GitHub.

Benchmark’s Unique Partnership Structure

Founded in 1995, Benchmark has consistently operated with a deliberately lean team, typically comprising six or fewer general partners.

A defining characteristic of Benchmark is its commitment to an equal partnership model. This differs significantly from many venture capital firms, where compensation and profit sharing are often tiered based on seniority. At Benchmark, all general partners share equally in both fees and investment returns.

Notable Investments During Her Tenure

Throughout her time as a general partner at Benchmark, Tavel contributed to investments in several notable companies.

These include Hipcamp, a marketplace for campsites; Chainalysis, a cryptocurrency intelligence firm; and Supergreat, a beauty platform later acquired by Whatnot in 2023.

Her investment portfolio also encompassed Paparazzi, a photo-sharing application that ceased operations in 2022, and 11x, an AI-powered sales platform recently featured in TechCrunch.
