The Galaxy Z Flip: A More Accessible Foldable

The Galaxy Z Flip has historically been positioned as the companion device to the larger, more feature-rich Fold. With the Fold now incorporating advanced capabilities like S-Pen support and achieving a true “flagship” status, this distinction appears set to continue.

A Compelling Option in the Foldable Market

However, for consumers exploring the world of foldable smartphones, the clamshell design of the Z Flip offers distinct advantages. It has consistently been the more compact and, arguably, the more approachable option within the Galaxy Z lineup.

Despite a starting price of $1,380, the Z Flip 3 now benefits from a significant price reduction, even larger than that of the Fold.

Price Reduction and Mainstream Appeal

Currently priced at $999.99, the Z Flip is becoming increasingly competitive. This nearly $400 price drop positions it within the range of mainstream flagship devices. Considering this, alongside the improvements inherent in a third-generation product, it’s reasonable to suggest this is Samsung’s most widely appealing foldable to date.

It certainly represents a substantial improvement over earlier foldable attempts, such as the original Motorola Razr.

Enhanced Durability and Design

A comprehensive review will be necessary for a definitive assessment, but Samsung has clearly prioritized durability in the latest iteration. This includes a reinforced protective film utilizing PET plastic and a redesigned display panel configuration to address the traditional weak point of these devices.

The device also incorporates Samsung’s proprietary Armor Aluminum for the frame, Gorilla Glass Victus on the exterior, and IPX8 water resistance. This means improved protection against water damage compared to previous models.

Materials and Water Resistance

While not rated for dust resistance due to the hinge mechanism, Samsung believes its improved design effectively mitigates particulate matter intrusion. The hinge is designed to expel any debris that might enter and potentially damage the screen.

Redesigned Aesthetics and Display

The Z Flip boasts a striking redesign. When closed, it presents a more aesthetically pleasing appearance than the Fold and is considerably more pocketable.

Available colors include Cream, Green, Lavender, and Black, with additional grips and straps offered. Online purchases unlock access to Gray, Pink, and White color options.

The internal display remains at 6.7 inches (2640 x 1080), while the cover screen has expanded from 1.1 to 1.9 inches – a notable increase for such small displays.

Camera Specifications

The camera system remains largely consistent with the Flip 2:

  • Front Camera: 10MP Selfie, F2.4, 1.22μm pixel size, 80-degree field of view (FOV)
  • Rear Camera 1: 12MP Ultra Wide, F2.2, 1.12μm pixel size, 123-degree FOV
  • Rear Camera 2: 12MP Wide-angle, Dual Pixel AF, OIS, F1.8, 1.4μm pixel size, 78-degree FOV

Performance and Battery

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The battery capacity is 3,300mAh, split across two modules to accommodate the folding design. It supports fast wired and wireless charging, as well as Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare feature.

Availability and Pre-order Incentives

The Galaxy Z Flip is currently available for pre-order and will begin shipping on August 26. Pre-ordering customers will receive a $150 Samsung Credit.
