Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+ Now Available
Samsung has released its Galaxy SmartTag+, a direct competitor to Apple’s anticipated AirTags. Initially announced in January alongside the standard Galaxy SmartTag, the SmartTag+ utilizes advanced technology for locating lost items.
Key Features and Functionality
The SmartTag+ supports both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies. This allows it to be attached to belongings like backpacks and keychains for easy tracking.
Unlike the original SmartTag, the SmartTag+ leverages UWB for more precise location finding. This capability is similar to what is expected from Apple’s AirTags.
Enhanced Location Capabilities
Users of the SmartTag+ can utilize augmented reality (AR) technology through their Samsung phones to pinpoint the tag’s location. The device’s spatial awareness features guide users closer to the missing item.
A loud ringing function can also be activated remotely, assisting in locating tags hidden in places like under cushions.
SmartThings Find Network
The SmartTag+ incorporates a community find feature. Nearby Galaxy devices, with user consent, can assist in locating lost items and notifying the owner via the SmartThings Find network.
Samsung emphasizes that all location data is encrypted, ensuring privacy and limiting access to only the tag’s owner.
Design and Compatibility
Currently, the SmartTag+ is available in black and gray, differing from the pink and green options offered for the original SmartTag.
Due to its reliance on UWB, the SmartTag+ is compatible only with select Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Fold2.
Market Context and Competition
The launch of the SmartTag+ coincides with a potentially significant shift in the lost item tracker market.
Apple’s entry into this space, currently dominated by companies like Tile, is expected to be disruptive. Apple’s AirTags will utilize UWB for enhanced spatial data and integrate with the Find My app.
Tile's Response
Tile is also developing its own UWB tracker, but intends to maintain its direct customer relationship by offering AR finding features through its own iOS app, rather than integrating with Apple’s Find My network.
Samsung's Position
Samsung, with its first-party trackers designed for its own ecosystem, doesn't face the same concerns as Tile. The SmartTag+ effectively serves as the AirTag equivalent for Samsung users.
The arrival of Apple’s AirTags may influence demand for Android-compatible trackers like the SmartTag+.
Availability and Pricing
The Galaxy SmartTag+ will be available for purchase starting April 16th.
The original Galaxy SmartTags are priced at $29.99, while the new SmartTag+ costs $39.99 in the United States.
