Samsung Revitalizes Older Devices with Galaxy Upcycling Beta

Several years ago, Samsung initially unveiled its Galaxy Upcycling initiative. However, updates have been limited, with a brief demonstration at CES in January being a notable exception.

Today, the company has announced the commencement of a beta program for Upcycling at Home, making it available to users located in the United States, Korea, and the United Kingdom.

A Novel Approach to Device Lifecycles

This program presents a unique solution in a consumer landscape often driven by frequent upgrades, typically every two to three years. It aims to extend the usability of older handsets.

Rather than discarding devices in landfills or letting them accumulate dust, this initiative seeks to repurpose them.

“Our focus is on reimagining the utilization of existing resources,” stated Sung-Koo Kim, VP of Samsung, in a press release. “We believe that successful upcycling hinges on developing solutions that transform outdated technology into something valuable.”

He further emphasized the company’s dedication to incorporating sustainable practices and invited users to participate in building a more environmentally conscious future through Galaxy Upcycling at Home.

Transforming Handsets into Smart Home Solutions

The program allows for the conversion of older devices into functional smart home tools, including monitors for childcare and pets.

Access to this functionality is provided through the SmartThings Labs section within the Samsung SmartThings App.

Key Features and Functionality

Once activated, the repurposed device can deliver notifications based on detected sounds, such as a baby’s cry or a dog’s bark. The corresponding audio is included with the alert.

Furthermore, integrated sensors can be utilized to automatically activate a room’s lighting when ambient light levels decrease.

The service is designed to optimize battery performance, ensuring prolonged operation while continuously monitoring for these specific events.
