Samsung Galaxy Buds 2: A Focus on Functionality

Earlier in the year, Nothing introduced the Ear (1) earbuds, positioning them distinctly as fashion statements. While the company emphasized the concept of transparent design and its non-intrusive nature, the product's launch through StockX signaled a clear prioritization of fashion-forward appeal.

A Different Approach

Conversely, Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Buds 2 represent a departure from this trend. They adopt an almost deliberately understated design philosophy. This approach aligns with previous iterations of the Buds line, yet provides a notable – and welcome – contrast, especially considering Samsung’s reputation for producing visually striking smartphones.

The company’s relatively subtle marketing of its headphones is a double-edged sword. Greater clarity in branding across its increasingly diverse range of models would be beneficial. Prior to the launch, I requested clarification regarding the product lineup, and Samsung responded with the following:

This confirms that the new, entry-level Buds, priced at $149, largely supersede the $170 Buds Live. Without significant updates, the Buds Live are likely to be phased out, resulting in a streamlined offering of the Buds 2 and the premium Buds Pro.

The "Pretty Good" Era of Wireless Earbuds

The wireless earbud market has rapidly converged on a standard of “acceptable quality.” Finding a genuinely poor-performing pair exceeding $100 is increasingly difficult. Consequently, I often advise consumers to select earbuds from the same manufacturer as their smartphone. Direct access to a device’s hardware and software provides a distinct advantage.

This is particularly true for a global leader like Samsung, possessing a substantial market share. The Galaxy Buds 2 embody this “pretty good” standard. They prioritize functionality over flashiness, featuring a design that is 15% smaller and 20% lighter than the original Galaxy Buds, aiming for a discreet and comfortable fit.

I often experience discomfort with many earbuds, but these are ergonomically designed for extended wear. The exposed side provides sufficient surface area for touch controls. However, the compact size makes accidental activation a concern, particularly during activities like running when adjustments are needed.

Sound Quality and Features

The sound quality is solid, benefiting from the expertise of Samsung’s subsidiary, AKG. While not exceptional, it delivers the performance expected from $149 earbuds. The active noise canceling is also commendable, providing a perfectly adequate and practical experience. For those prioritizing superior audio, the Buds Pro offer a straightforward upgrade, or alternatives from brands like Nura or Sony are available.

The Buds Pro also include features such as 360 Audio, which will likely only appeal to a limited segment of potential buyers.

Battery life is rated at five hours with ANC enabled and 7.5 hours with it disabled. The charging case extends this to a respectable 20 hours. The IPX2 water resistance provides protection against sweat, though improvements in this area are always welcome.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the list of shortcomings is minimal. The Galaxy Buds 2 are a reliable, unassuming choice and a seamless addition for users within the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem.
