Saleor Raises $2.5M Seed Round for Headless E-commerce Platform

Saleor Secures $2.5 Million Seed Funding for Headless E-commerce Platform
Saleor, a startup with operations in Poland and the United States, has successfully raised $2.5 million in seed funding. The company provides a headless e-commerce platform designed to streamline the development of advanced online shopping experiences.
Investment Details
This funding round was spearheaded by Cherry Ventures, based in Berlin, and also saw participation from a group of angel investors. Notable among these are Guillermo Rauch, CEO of Vercel and creator of Next.js, Chris Schagen, formerly the CMO of Contentful, and Kevin Mahaffey, a co-founder of Lookout.
Future Development Plans
The newly acquired capital will be strategically allocated to the continued enhancement of Saleor’s headless e-commerce platform. This includes the imminent launch of a cloud-based product and the refinement of its GraphQL API, specifically tailored for front-end developers.
Company Background
Although formally founded in 2020, Saleor’s origins trace back to 2013. Founders Mirek Mencel and Patryk Zawadzki initially developed the product within their agency before spinning it out as a standalone entity.
Saleor is characterized as an “API-first” platform employing a headless architecture. This approach focuses the platform’s capabilities on back-end processes, allowing developers to concentrate on creating compelling front-end user experiences.
Origins of Saleor
“Saleor arose from a practical need encountered during our agency work at Mirumee Software,” explains Saleor co-founder Mirek Mencel. “We required e-commerce software that was more modular, adaptable, and capable of scaling effectively.”
Mencel continues, “Existing solutions for larger brands often came with limitations such as vendor lock-in, slow integration of new technologies, and costly certification requirements. On the open-source side, we found Magento’s developer experience lacking and other alternatives insufficient for large-scale operations.”
A Focus on Open Source and Scalability
Consequently, Saleor was envisioned as an open-source platform prioritizing “technical excellence and quality.” The goal was to deliver enhanced scalability and extensibility compared to traditional, proprietary software.
By 2016, the platform had evolved from an internal tool used by Mencel and Zawadzki’s agency into a resource utilized by developers globally.
The Shift to API-First
“We recognized a growing demand from brands for more innovative and dynamic front-end experiences,” says Mencel. “Decoupling Saleor’s core functionality from its presentation layer was the logical step towards achieving these advanced front-ends. This involved a significant undertaking, requiring us to rebuild a previously robust open-source e-commerce platform with an API-first design.”
Embracing GraphQL
The founders also determined that GraphQL offered superior “power, precision, and developer satisfaction” compared to RESTful APIs. Adopting a philosophy of prioritizing quality over quantity, they fully committed to Saleor’s GraphQL API.
“We have consistently found this decision to be the correct one,” states Mencel.
Current Status and Vision
Following the release of Saleor 2.0 in 2018, the team has expanded to 20 members. Mencel articulates Saleor’s core vision as “developer-first commerce,” encompassing open-source principles, GraphQL technology, and a “fair-priced” cloud offering – a vision that has resonated with Cherry Ventures.
Cherry Ventures' Perspective
“We are observing a significant shift as developers increasingly adopt headless commerce solutions, enabling more flexible and differentiated shopping experiences,” notes Filip Dames, founding partner of Cherry Ventures.
Dames adds, “Mirek, Patryk, and their team are leading this evolution, empowering innovative merchants to create cutting-edge shopping experiences that seamlessly scale across all consumer touchpoints and devices.”
Looking Ahead
“We chose to seek venture funding to expand the Saleor core team and expedite the development of Saleor Cloud, which is scheduled for launch this year,” concludes Mencel.
