robomart launches its mobile convenience store in beta for west hollywood residents

After nearly nine months since the start of the pandemic, a state that was among the first to implement restrictions is now facing a resurgence of the virus. Due to a significant increase in COVID-19 infections, California Governor Gavin Newsom has reinstated widespread closures throughout the state, prompting many people to seek alternative ways to obtain necessary items without venturing out.
While still under development, Robomart has initiated a limited service offering in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Currently available through an invitation-only beta program, the service provides delivery of essential goods directly from a van. Customers order products through the Robomart application, and a vehicle will then travel to their location to complete the delivery.
The initial launch focuses on a mobile pharmacy, featuring 500 units each of 50 different products. This selection encompasses over-the-counter medications, personal care items, and various household and kitchen supplies. Robomart also plans to introduce a grocery version of the service in the same neighborhood within the next few weeks. The long-term vision involves utilizing fully autonomous vehicles for deliveries once all required regulations and technological challenges are addressed. Currently, the company is collaborating with Zeeba Vans, a fleet leasing provider, to handle deliveries. The goal is to expand the fleet to 100 vans over the next two years, with checkouts managed using RFID technology.
The company’s investors include Wasabi Ventures, SOSV, HAX, Hustle Fund, Automation Fund and Archetype.
According to Garrett Winther of HAX, in a statement to TechCrunch, “The startup community has largely focused on fully autonomous driving as the sole pathway to profitable on-demand commerce.” He continues, “However, a few adjustments to the existing local distribution system, combined with intelligent operational strategies, can enable ‘store hailing’ to become scalable much faster than anticipated.”The company is clearly responding to current needs with this new service.
