Rivian Opens $4.6M Service Center Ahead of Vehicle Sales

Rivian Expands Operations with New Michigan Facility
Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer preparing for its IPO, is demonstrating continued rapid growth. The company is establishing a vehicle service support operations facility in Plymouth, Michigan, to cater to its growing customer base.
This expansion coincides with the anticipated commencement of deliveries for the initial edition of the R1T pickup truck later this month.
Investment and Job Creation
The new facility represents a $4.6 million investment, with $750,000 provided as a business development grant from the state of Michigan. These funds are allocated to incentivize business attraction and foster job creation and investment within the state.
This isn’t Rivian’s first investment in Michigan; while manufacturing takes place in Normal, Illinois, the company’s corporate headquarters is located in Plymouth.
Furthermore, Rivian previously established a research and development center in Dearborn in 2015, representing a capital investment of $29.5 million.
Service and Support Capabilities
The new center will function as an extension of Rivian’s existing headquarters, as confirmed by a company spokesperson.
The electric vehicle maker intends to provide comprehensive support to all Rivian owners. This includes “around-the-clock assistance from the Rivian Roadside and Service Support team,” offering support with vehicle inquiries, roadside assistance requests, and service scheduling.
The Michigan Governor’s Office highlights these positions as high-wage jobs, accompanied by benefits such as tuition reimbursement and childcare assistance.
Direct Sales and In-House Service
Similar to Tesla, Rivian employs a direct sales model, enabling customers to order vehicles directly through its online platform.
Currently, 22 states permit OEMs to sell directly to consumers. In these states, Rivian can establish showrooms and provide test drive opportunities.
However, customers across all states can order vehicles directly online without restriction.
Rivian is committed to maintaining in-house servicing and support operations. The company website details plans for 24/7 support through its Service Team, offering troubleshooting, diagnostics, appointment scheduling, and roadside assistance.
Regulatory Approvals
Last week, Rivian confirmed receiving necessary certifications from three agencies, granting approval to sell and deliver both the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV in all 50 United States.
