Rivian to Install 10,000+ EV Chargers by End of 2023

Rivian's Extensive Charging Network Expansion

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer supported by Amazon, Cox Automotive, and T. Rowe Price, is actively developing a substantial charging infrastructure. The company intends to deploy over 10,000 charging stations across the United States and Canada by the close of 2023.

Dual-Purpose Charging Strategy

This network is designed with a two-pronged approach. Fast chargers will be strategically positioned along major highways to facilitate rapid charging for Rivian’s electric models. Simultaneously, Level 2 chargers will be installed in more remote locations, such as near parks and recreational trailheads, catering to adventurous drivers.

Rivian Adventure Network Details

Rivian announced on Thursday that its “Rivian Adventure Network” will encompass more than 3,500 DC fast chargers spread across over 600 locations. Access to these fast-charging sites will be exclusive to Rivian vehicle owners.

Each location will feature multiple charging stalls and will be conveniently situated along highways and primary roadways, often in proximity to cafes and retail establishments, as detailed in a recent company blog post.

Expanding with "Waypoint" Chargers

In addition to the fast-charging network, Rivian is deploying thousands of “waypoint” Level 2 AC chargers throughout the US and Canada. These chargers will deliver a charging rate of 11.5 kW, potentially adding up to 25 miles of range per hour for the R1T pickup and R1S SUV.

These waypoint chargers will be strategically placed along routes frequently traveled by Rivian customers. Locations include shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, campsites, and parks. The initial rollout includes installations at all 42 Colorado State Parks, with each park receiving two Rivian Waypoints, beginning in July.

Addressing Customer Needs and Building Confidence

The addition of this secondary charging layer is a deliberate effort to appeal to Rivian’s customer base and reinforce confidence in both the brand and the broader adoption of electric vehicles. This was stated by Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe in a TechCrunch interview last year.

Comparison to Tesla's Charging Infrastructure

Rivian’s strategy shares similarities with Tesla’s approach, yet exhibits key distinctions. Tesla has established a proprietary network of over 20,000 Superchargers, primarily located near highways and commuter routes, alongside destination chargers at upscale hotels and restaurants.

Rivian’s waypoint chargers fulfill a comparable function to Tesla’s destination chargers, albeit at different types of locations. However, unlike Tesla’s network, Rivian’s waypoint sites will be publicly accessible and utilize the J1772 plug, a standard North American connector for electric vehicles.

Charging Network Location Insights

Rivian has released a map illustrating the planned locations of its fast chargers. While currently not interactive, the map indicates planned installations near prominent national parks, including Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park in Utah.

Accessing the Charging Network

Rivian owners will be able to locate both waypoint chargers and branded fast chargers through the vehicle’s navigation system and a dedicated mobile app. The app and in-car system will also allow drivers to monitor charging progress.

Charging Standards and Compatibility

Rivian vehicles are equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS), a direct current connector for rapid charging. CCS is an open international standard gaining traction in both Europe and North America. This ensures compatibility with any third-party CCS charging station without requiring adapters.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

The entire Rivian charging network is committed to being powered by 100% renewable energy. This will be achieved through strategic partnerships with electricity providers, utilizing wind and solar power sources, and leveraging Renewable Energy Certificates to offset other energy consumption.

Financial Backing for Network Expansion

The development of this extensive network requires significant capital investment, which Rivian has successfully secured. In January, the company announced a $2.65 billion funding round led by T. Rowe Price Associates Inc., with participation from Fidelity Management, Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners, among others. This investment elevated Rivian’s valuation to $27.6 billion.
