Rivian Partners with Google for Custom Maps in EVs & App

Rivian and Google's Collaborative Navigation System

A joint effort between Rivian and Google, spanning 18 months, has culminated in a new navigation experience for Rivian electric vehicles. The resulting software update introduces a customized version of Google Maps, marking a significant step in Rivian’s strategy to differentiate its vehicles through advanced software capabilities.

A Unique Automotive Integration

This integration differs substantially from typical Google Maps implementations in automobiles. Unlike Android Auto, a smartphone projection app, or Google Built-In, an embedded Android Automotive OS utilized by brands like Volvo, this collaboration represents a novel approach.

Rivian drivers will now experience Google Maps within their in-car navigation, but with substantial modifications. These include Rivian’s distinctive trip planner, user interface elements, design aesthetics, and comprehensive data on EV charger locations, as explained by Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s head of software.

Addressing Customer Feedback

Rivian proactively addressed customer feedback regarding its previous navigation system. Rather than simply refining the existing Mapbox-based maps, the company opted for a complete overhaul through collaboration with Google.

“Google demonstrated a willingness to explore a new collaborative model, offering deeper integration at the API level,” Bensaid stated. “This required a technology partner to facilitate the integration of both platforms, and we are extremely pleased with the outcome.”

Key Features of the New Maps

The updated maps will provide essential features such as estimated time of arrival, real-time traffic updates, detailed place information, and satellite imagery, all seamlessly integrated into Rivian’s navigation framework.

Users will also benefit from interactive points of interest directly within the in-car system.

Enhanced EV Trip Planning

Rivian’s advanced trip planner, renowned for its accurate EV range estimates and intelligent charging stop selection, remains a central component. This functionality is powered by A Better Routeplanner.

Furthermore, features like “range on arrival” calculations, customizable charging preferences, and Rivian’s proprietary charging site rating system – based on real-world data from Rivian vehicles – are now integrated into the Google Maps experience.

Rollout and Mobile App Updates

The new Google Maps-based navigation system is being deployed today via a software update for both Rivian vehicles and the associated mobile application.

The Rivian mobile app is also receiving enhancements. These include the addition of place photos, place descriptions, and satellite views (available with a Connect+ subscription). Users can now view traffic conditions and incidents directly within the app, and continue to seamlessly share destinations between the app and their vehicle.
