Rivian Commercial Van Sales Now Open to All Businesses

Rivian Expands Commercial Van Sales
Rivian is now offering its electric commercial vans for sale to all U.S. businesses. This move comes over a year after the company concluded an exclusive supply agreement with its primary investor, Amazon.
Van Models Available
Two distinct van models are available for purchase: the 500 and the 700. However, purchases are restricted to registered businesses only.
Individuals interested in utilizing the vans for personal use, such as van-life conversions, will need to await potential future direct sales opportunities from Rivian.
New Revenue Stream for Rivian
The opening of the commercial van fleet business represents a significant potential revenue source. This stream had remained untapped since the termination of the exclusive agreement with Amazon in November 2023.
This expansion arrives at a critical juncture for Rivian, as the company actively works to reduce financial losses. These efforts are being undertaken in anticipation of launching a more accessible and affordable SUV model in the coming year.
Preparation and Testing
Rivian has been actively conducting field trials with prospective fleet customers. Over the past year, the company has focused on preparing a comprehensive commercial fleet solution.
This preparation included the development of robust service infrastructure, advanced digital tools, and the incorporation of valuable feedback gathered from pilot programs with fleet clients, as stated by spokesperson Tanya Miller.
Company Statements
Tom Solomon, Rivian’s senior director of business development, commented, “We have been focusing our efforts on testing with some larger fleets over the last year, and we’re really pleased with how those trials have gone.”
Background of the Amazon Partnership
Commercial van production commenced in 2021, following Amazon’s initial order of 100,000 vehicles in 2019. This order was part of Amazon’s broader initiative to minimize its environmental footprint.
Prior to the exclusivity agreement, Amazon had already made a substantial investment in Rivian, leading a $700 million funding round just seven months earlier.
Current Amazon Fleet Size
Currently, Amazon operates a fleet of 20,000 commercial vans manufactured by Rivian, according to Solomon.
