Rivian Announces Second Workforce Cut in 2024 | R2 SUV Launch

Rivian Announces Further Workforce Reduction
Rivian is implementing a reduction in its workforce, impacting approximately 150 employees. This marks the company’s second personnel adjustment within a few months.
The company verified to TechCrunch that the recent reductions primarily affect the “commercial” division, responsible for sales and service functions. Employees impacted by these changes will be considered for future openings and encouraged to apply for other available roles.
Focus on R2 SUV Launch
These adjustments are occurring as Rivian prepares for the crucial launch of its more accessible R2 SUV, anticipated in the coming year.
Recent Workforce Adjustments
This round of layoffs follows a previous reduction of around 1% of the total workforce, initially reported by TechCrunch in late June. That earlier cut specifically targeted personnel within the manufacturing sector.
Over the past two years, Rivian has undertaken several workforce recalibrations. A significant reduction of roughly 10% of staff occurred in early 2024.
An additional, smaller workforce adjustment was also made in April 2024. At the beginning of the year, the company employed approximately 15,000 individuals globally.
Ongoing Strategic Realignment
- The cuts are concentrated within the sales and service operations teams.
- Affected employees are eligible for rehire and internal transfers.
- The company is prioritizing resources for the upcoming R2 SUV release.
