Rivian R2 SUV Door Handle Redesign for Improved Safety

Rivian Adjusts R2 Door Handle Design Following Safety Feedback
Rivian is modifying the door handle design on its forthcoming R2 SUV. This adjustment is a direct response to safety concerns voiced by both employees and customers, as reported by Bloomberg News.
The automotive industry has seen a growing trend toward electronically latched door handles in recent years. This design choice facilitates a more streamlined aesthetic and improved aerodynamic performance.
However, a common consequence is the placement of manual emergency door releases in locations that are difficult to access.
Changes to the R2 Interior
For the R2, scheduled for release next year, Rivian will reposition the interior manual releases. They will be placed in a “more clearly visible” area, situated closer to the electrically operated door handles, according to Bloomberg’s report.
Industry-Wide Scrutiny of Electronic Door Handles
This design revision occurs during a period of increased examination regarding electronic door handle systems. A recent Bloomberg report highlighted instances of Tesla owners and passengers becoming trapped inside their vehicles due to the challenging location of manual releases.
Consequently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation. Tesla has subsequently announced plans to redesign its system.
Recent Recall Affecting Ford
Earlier in the year, Ford issued a recall and temporarily halted sales of its Mustang Mach-E. The issue stemmed from the potential for the electronic latches to become stuck in a locked state if the vehicle’s 12-volt battery failed.
This situation underscores the importance of readily accessible manual override mechanisms in vehicles utilizing electronic latching systems.
Rivian’s proactive adjustment to the R2’s door handle design demonstrates a commitment to addressing potential safety issues before they impact consumers.
