Rivian Trademarks Electric Bikes – Expanding Beyond Vehicles?

Rivian Explores E-Bike Market with New Trademark Filing

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has submitted a new trademark application encompassing bicycles and electric bikes, alongside their associated components. This action suggests the company may be evaluating an entry into the burgeoning e-bike market.

Potential Diversification Strategy

The filing could indicate Rivian’s intention to broaden its product range with a more affordable offering. E-bikes are generally less expensive to manufacture at scale compared to electric pickup trucks.

This potential move aligns with Rivian’s focus on customers who embrace an “adventure” lifestyle. Expanding into e-bikes would cater directly to this demographic.

When contacted by TechCrunch, Rivian declined to comment on the matter.

Growing E-Bike Industry Attracts Automakers

While trademark filings don't always result in product launches, the e-bike industry is experiencing significant growth. Sales have increased by 240% over the past year, ending in July.

Other established automotive brands are recognizing the potential of this market. For example, Porsche recently introduced two e-bikes inspired by the design of the Taycan Cross Turismo.

BMW has also announced plans to develop a range of e-bikes and other micromobility solutions, including the fully electric CE 04 scooter.

Expansion of Production Capabilities

Last month, Rivian outlined its plans to utilize the $13.7 billion raised during its initial public offering. These funds will support the construction of a second manufacturing facility in Georgia, complementing its existing plant in Illinois.

This expansion aims to double Rivian’s production capacity and facilitate the in-house production of battery cells. These cells could potentially be utilized in various vehicle types.

Details of the Trademark Filing

As initially reported by Rivian Forums, the trademark filing details Rivian’s desire to extend its brand coverage to include:

  • Bicycles
  • Electric bicycles
  • Structural parts for bicycles and electric bicycles

Integrated Bike Carrying Solutions

Rivian has also recently filed a patent for an integrated tailgate cargo system for vehicles. This system essentially functions as a tailgate-mounted bike rack.

This design would allow drivers to transport bicycles on their pickup trucks without compromising bed space. Given Rivian’s tendency to offer accessories for its R1T truck, this suggests a comprehensive solution for its target audience – the environmentally aware and adventurous American consumer.
