Rivian R1T Launch Edition Delivery Delayed

Rivian R1T Launch Edition Deliveries Postponed
Rivian has announced a one-month delay in the delivery schedule for the R1T Launch Edition, the initial limited-release version of its all-electric adventure vehicle. This information was communicated via an update published on the company’s official website.
Delivery Timeline Adjustment
Preorder customers can now anticipate receiving their pickup trucks starting in July, rather than the previously communicated timeframe of June. Rivian projects that all Launch Edition deliveries will be finalized by Spring 2022. The initial report of this change was brought to light by members of the Rivian Forum.
Reasons for the Delay
A Rivian spokesperson explained that the delay stems from a confluence of factors. These include logistical challenges with shipping containers, the persistent global chip shortage, and the necessity of fully establishing a robust service infrastructure.
Despite broader industry impacts, Rivian has indicated it has been comparatively less affected by the chip shortage due to the comparatively lower chip requirements of its vehicles.
Previous Timeline and Adjustments
Initial expectations, communicated to preorder holders in July 2020, targeted June 2021 for R1T deliveries. Deliveries of the R1S electric SUV were initially slated to begin two months later, in August. This is not the first adjustment to the delivery schedule, as construction at Rivian’s factory was temporarily halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
R1S Delivery Target Remains
The company spokesperson confirmed that Rivian is still working towards maintaining the August delivery timeframe for the R1S electric SUV.
First to Market
Even with this delay, Rivian is positioned to be among the first to deliver an electric truck to consumers, outpacing both established automakers and new EV companies. Lordstown Motors anticipates beginning deliveries of its “Endurance” truck in September, although production forecasts have been reduced.
The Ford F-150 Lightning, the electric iteration of the popular pickup, is expected to arrive in 2022, while Tesla has recently confirmed production of the Cybertruck will commence later this year.
Drive Program and Tour Events
Rivian will initiate its drive program in August, offering customers the opportunity to schedule at-home test drives or participate in tour events. Details regarding launch dates and reservation procedures for these tour events will be released in the coming weeks.
The initial tour will focus on several key cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Seattle.
Product Updates and Pricing
Several product updates have also been announced. The off-road upgrade is now an optional feature for both Launch Edition and Adventure Package vehicles. This change effectively reduces the price of these configurations by $2,000.
Customers desiring the off-road package can add it back for $2,000, returning the vehicle to its original price point. Furthermore, all Rivian vehicles will now include an onboard air compressor as standard equipment, previously exclusive to the Off-Road Upgrade.
Rivian Adventure Gear
Customers now have the option to incorporate Rivian Adventure Gear into their vehicle configurations. Available accessories include a rooftop tent, cargo bars, and a fully equipped camp kitchen featuring a 30-piece kitchen set.
