Rivian Layoffs: Manufacturing Team Cuts Before R2 Launch

Rivian Workforce Adjustment Ahead of R2 Launch
Rivian has recently implemented workforce reductions, impacting approximately 140 employees. This represents roughly 1% of the company’s total employee base.
These adjustments are occurring as Rivian prepares for the 2026 release of its anticipated, more accessible R2 SUV.
Focus on Manufacturing Efficiency
The majority of the positions eliminated were within Rivian’s manufacturing division. These cuts have been taking place since Wednesday, as reported by several former employees who requested anonymity.
Some departing staff were informed that their roles were being removed to address and eliminate existing “process inefficiencies” within the manufacturing process.
Company Confirmation and Internal Opportunities
Rivian officially acknowledged the workforce reduction in a statement provided to TechCrunch. A spokesperson indicated the decision was a difficult one.
The statement clarified that the cuts are part of a continuing initiative to enhance operational efficiency specifically related to the production of the R2 vehicle.
Affected employees are being actively encouraged to explore and apply for other available positions within the Rivian organization.
Recent Workforce Trends
As per its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Rivian commenced the year with a workforce exceeding 14,800 individuals across North America and Europe.
This latest reduction follows previous workforce adjustments. A 10% reduction occurred earlier in 2024, and another layoff affecting around 1% of staff took place in April 2024.
These actions demonstrate Rivian’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and prepare for the launch of the R2 SUV.
