Ring Doorbell Recall: Fire Hazard - Safety Information

Ring devices, which are part of Amazon, have frequently faced questions from those concerned about data privacy. Currently, the company is addressing a different kind of problem, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for its second-generation doorbell. Approximately 350,000 units sold in the U.S. and 8,700 in Canada are being recalled due to potential fire and burn hazards. These products were available for purchase through Amazon's online stores and physical retail locations.

This recall follows 23 reported incidents of fires and eight reports of minor burn injuries linked to this particular model. The CPSC states that the problem stems from the use of improper screws during the installation process. Ring asserts that customers who utilize only the screws provided with the device should not experience any issues. However, using incorrect screws can potentially damage the doorbell’s battery, which could then lead to the hazards described, potentially causing personal injury or damage to property.

“Our customers’ safety is our greatest concern,” a company representative communicated to TechCrunch. “We are, and will continue to be, fully cooperative with the CPSC regarding this matter. We have also reached out to customers who bought a Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) to make sure they have the latest user manual and are following the correct device installation steps. There is no need for customers to send back their devices.”

The CPSC website provides specific information about the affected units and confirms that Amazon is voluntarily managing the recall. According to the CPSC, “Users should immediately cease installation of the recalled video doorbells and get in touch with Ring to obtain updated installation guidance.”

Since Amazon acquired Ring in 2018, the brand has been the subject of debate regarding both privacy and security. Last September, the company committed to implementing end-to-end encryption for video recordings made by its devices.
