RevenueCat & Paddle Partnership: Web Payments for App Developers

New Partnership Offers Alternative to Apple In-App Purchases

Paddle and RevenueCat, leading providers of payment and subscription infrastructure, have collaborated to introduce a new solution for app developers. This alternative arrives following recent changes to U.S. App Store policies, which now permit developers to independently manage their payment processing.

Streamlined Payment and Subscription Management

The companies announced on Tuesday a novel integration designed to facilitate purchases made by users directly from developers’ applications, regardless of whether accessed via web browsers or mobile devices.

Paddle specializes in handling web-based payments, encompassing the complexities of tax regulations and compliance requirements.

Simultaneously, RevenueCat provides developers with comprehensive access to their subscription data and performance metrics across both web and mobile environments.

Impact of the Epic Games Ruling

The ability to provide links for in-app purchases through the web represents a significant shift for iOS applications within the U.S. market.

This change stemmed from a ruling by District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers during the antitrust lawsuit brought against Apple by Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite.

Although Apple largely prevailed in the case, with the court determining it did not operate as a monopolist, it was mandated to allow developers to direct users to alternative web payment options without incurring Apple’s standard commission fees.

Unified Subscription Experience

The combined offering from Paddle and RevenueCat enables users to subscribe once, either on the web or through a mobile app, and then seamlessly access their subscription across all their devices.

Furthermore, all subscription data is centralized within the RevenueCat dashboard, granting developers real-time analytics and simplified tracking across web, iOS, and Android platforms.

Existing Implementations and Benefits

Several applications are already leveraging services from both Paddle and RevenueCat, such as the running app Runna.

For these apps, the new integration provides a more efficient pathway to web monetization, as highlighted by the companies involved.

Statements from Leadership

“A substantial opportunity exists for subscription-based apps to increase revenue by extending their reach to the web – however, this expansion introduces new technical and operational hurdles,” stated Jimmy Fitzgerald, CEO of Paddle, in a press release shared with TechCrunch.

“Our partnership with RevenueCat simplifies subscription management across platforms for developers, while simultaneously granting them greater control over their monetization strategies.”

Jacob Eiting, co-founder and CEO of RevenueCat, which currently supports over 70,000 applications, added that Paddle proved to be an ideal collaborator on this initiative.

He explained that the partnership will empower developers to offer web-based payment options in addition to those available through traditional app stores.
