Removing the "Map Network Drive" Menu Items

Have you ever wondered how to eliminate the "Map Network Drive" dialog box if you've never utilized it? Many users, including myself, prefer mapping drives via the command line. Therefore, a registry modification offers a convenient solution to remove these menu options.

If you are unsure what this refers to, simply right-click on the Computer icon. The context menu will display these items. Here's the same menu after the modification has been applied.

While uninstalling, disabling, or removing file sharing entirely would be a straightforward approach, this registry hack provides an alternative if you wish to retain those functionalities while still removing the menu items.

Important Note: This adjustment will disable all connect and disconnect menu items, affecting both existing mapped drives and the Tools menu.

Manual Registry Hack

Access regedit.exe through the Start menu search or the Run dialog box. Then, navigate to the following registry key, creating it if it doesn't already exist:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Within the right-hand pane, create a new 32-bit DWORD value with these settings:

  • Name: NoNetConnectDisconnect
  • Value: 1

The change should take effect immediately. Right-clicking on Computer will demonstrate the difference. To revert the change, either delete the key or set its value to 0.

Download Registry Hack

Download, extract, and double-click the RemoveMapNetworkDrive.reg file to import the necessary information into the registry. An uninstall script is also included to reverse the changes.
