Reddit Talk: Reddit Launches Live Audio Chat

Reddit Launches Reddit Talk: A Clubhouse Competitor
Following a recent report by Mashable, Reddit has officially introduced Reddit Talk, its answer to the growing popularity of Clubhouse. This new feature centers around live audio conversations, mirroring the core functionality of its predecessor.
Design and Functionality
The user interface of Reddit Talk closely resembles Clubhouse. Speakers are positioned at the top of the screen, resembling a stage, while listeners are displayed below. Both speakers and listeners are represented by rounded profile pictures.
However, Reddit has integrated this format directly into its existing subreddits, the platform’s individual community forums. Initially, only subreddit moderators will have the ability to initiate audio talks, as the feature undergoes testing.
Moderation Tools
Moderators will be equipped with a suite of tools to manage live sessions. These include the ability to invite participants, mute disruptive users, and remove speakers as needed.
Furthermore, moderators can ban users from talks entirely, preventing their re-entry. This ensures a controlled and positive environment for discussions.
Speaker Invitations and Platform Access
While only moderators can begin talks, they can extend speaking invitations to other users once a session is underway. Listeners can access Reddit Talk sessions on both iOS and Android devices.
Unique Reddit Features
Reddit has incorporated its own distinctive elements into the experience. Users can now react to speakers using a unique set of emojis, including popular Reddit designs like a rocket ship and the Reddit alien.
Reddit is also exploring options for moderators to customize the visual aspects of their talks. This includes changing background colors and selecting preferred emojis for their communities.
Potential Use Cases
Reddit envisions Reddit Talk being utilized for a variety of interactive formats. These include Q&A sessions, AMAs (Ask Me Anything), lectures, and sports-related discussions.
The platform also suggests its suitability for informal community hangouts and feedback sessions.
Future Development
Reddit is actively developing additional features tailored to support AMAs and other conversational formats. This commitment demonstrates a focus on enhancing the user experience.
Addressing Clubhouse Comparisons
In response to user inquiries, Reddit acknowledged the similarities to Clubhouse. They emphasized the value of real-time voice discussions within communities.
Reddit’s Product Lead for creators stated the goal is to foster engaging conversations, starting with moderators, and creating a unique, supportive environment.
Competitive Landscape
Reddit is entering a crowded market. Several other platforms, including Facebook, Twitter (with Spaces), Discord, Telegram, Spotify, and LinkedIn, are also developing similar audio-based features.
Availability and Waitlist
Reddit Talk is currently in a testing phase and is not yet publicly available. Community moderators can join a waitlist to gain early access.
Following the test period, Reddit plans to expand access to other trusted users, allowing them to host talks as well.
