Reddit NFT Profile Pictures: New Test Allows Users to Showcase NFTs

Reddit Explores NFT Profile Pictures
Reddit is currently evaluating a new functionality that would permit users to showcase any NFT they possess as their profile image. This extends beyond the platform’s own Ethereum-based NFTs, known as “CryptoSnoos,” which were released in limited numbers previously.
Similar Functionality on Other Platforms
A comparable feature enabling NFTs to be used as profile pictures was recently implemented on Twitter. On Twitter, clicking these images reveals information about the NFT itself, and they are visually distinguished by a hexagonal shape.
However, the specifics of how Reddit’s NFT support will function are still under consideration.
Early Stages of Testing
According to a statement given to TechCrunch, Reddit clarified that this NFT test is in a preliminary phase and is not yet accessible to the general public.
“We are continually investigating methods to enhance the experience for Reddit users and communities,” stated Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt. “Currently, we are testing the ability to utilize NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and to verify ownership.”
“This is a limited, internal test, and no decisions have been made regarding expansion or full implementation.”
Reddit’s NFT Initiatives
Reddit has been actively experimenting with various NFT-related projects, even establishing a dedicated webpage for NFT activities at nft.reddit.com.
Currently, this page primarily highlights the CryptoSnoos, which represent Reddit’s own digital collectibles.
Understanding CryptoSnoos
The term “Snoo” refers to Reddit’s alien mascot. The CryptoSnoos are variations of Snoo’s image. Examples include a blocky depiction of the mascot and another resembling a helium balloon.
Only four CryptoSnoos have been released to date.
User Reactions to CryptoSnoos
The response to CryptoSnoos was quite diverse. A significant number of Redditors expressed dissatisfaction with Reddit’s involvement in NFTs, labeling it as “idiotic” or a “gimmick” in the comments section of the announcement post.
Concerns were also raised regarding the high cost of NFTs, which limited participation for many individuals.
However, some users displayed neutral curiosity or even support for Reddit’s endeavors.
Broader Industry Reception
These reactions reflect the generally divisive reception NFTs are receiving across various industries. A tool has already been created to block Twitter accounts utilizing NFT profile pictures.
Discord and Mozilla have both paused crypto projects following substantial user criticism. Gaming communities have experienced disruption as traditional game developers attempted to integrate crypto technologies.
Reddit has indicated that there are no firm plans to launch additional CryptoSnoos, as the initial release was also intended as a test.
Discovery of the New Test
The latest NFT test was initially discovered by developer Nima Owji. He informed TechCrunch that he found a banner referencing the project within Reddit’s web application.
The banner appeared on the main pages of Reddit’s communities but was not visible to regular users.
Owji theorized that the image suggested an expansion beyond CryptoSnoos, as it featured a variety of images representing different NFTs.
Banner Messaging
The banner clearly communicated the expanded scope, stating: “Your NFT, now your avatar!”
This was followed by a brief explanation: “You can now use digital collectibles as your Reddit avatar.”
The “Get Started” button on the banner was not functional at the time of discovery.
Code References and OpenSea
Owji subsequently identified references in Reddit’s code to a test collection of NFTs on OpenSea, which were further variations of the Reddit alien.
These NFTs are not currently available for sale and reside on Rinkeby, an Ethereum test network used for blockchain experimentation.
Future Blockchain Support
Reddit declined to provide further details regarding which blockchains would be supported if the NFT avatar feature is launched, or to offer any additional information about supported blockchains.
