Reddit Expands Hindi Language Support with Machine Translation

Reddit has recently implemented an update to its machine translation capabilities, now offering automatic translation of posts and comments into Hindi. This move is strategically aimed at increasing user engagement within the Indian market.

According to a company statement published on their blog, this expansion will make more organically created content accessible to speakers of one of India’s most prevalent languages.

Initial Rollout and Expansion of Translation Features

The platform initiated testing of its site-wide machine translation functionality in May of the previous year, initially focusing on the French language.

Subsequently, in September, the feature was broadened to encompass over 35 countries, with the addition of support for both Spanish and Portuguese languages.

Recent AI-Powered Search and India Focus

Just earlier this month, Reddit launched its Answers feature – powered by artificial intelligence – to users in several countries including India, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

Prior to this wider release, access to the Answers feature was restricted to a select group of English-speaking users located in the United States.

India continues to be a key area of focus for Reddit’s growth strategy.

Investment in Indian Operations

  • The company has been actively recruiting personnel in India.
  • Hiring efforts span multiple departments, including community building.
  • Growth, legal, and engineering roles are also being filled.
  • Reddit is currently seeking candidates for content and community-focused positions.

This demonstrates a significant commitment to expanding its presence and operations within the region.

Reddit has also announced plans to add support for Bengali in the near future.
