Reddit Testing Verification Badges - What You Need to Know

Reddit Introduces Limited Profile Verification
Reddit has initiated a restricted trial of verified profiles, denoted by a grey checkmark appearing alongside the username of prominent individuals or organizations.
Purpose of Verification
According to a recent blog post, this functionality is intended to assist Reddit users in discerning with whom they are interacting, particularly in situations where verification is crucial.
This includes instances such as an expert or celebrity conducting an AMA ("Ask Me Anything") session, a journalist reporting news, or a brand disseminating information.
A Return to Original Intent
Historically, internet verification checkmarks served solely to confirm the authenticity of a notable figure’s identity.
Reddit’s decision to implement verification for public figures is a response to concerns about the proliferation of misinformation.
Maintaining Reddit’s Culture
Reddit recognizes the importance of pseudonymity within its community, enabling users to express themselves with greater freedom.
The verification process is entirely voluntary and opt-in, not intended to establish an exclusive status.
Instead, it aims to facilitate easier identity confirmation for both general users and subreddit moderators.
Limitations of the System
The lack of a checkmark does not automatically indicate fraudulent activity.
This feature is currently being tested with a limited number of profiles, and a full rollout does not guarantee verification for all well-known Reddit users.
Notable User Example
For instance, Tony Hawk actively participates in skateboarding subreddits, engaging in casual conversations with fellow enthusiasts.
He occasionally showcases his skating skills on r/OldSkaters, demonstrating impressive abilities for a 57-year-old.
Eligibility and Privileges
During the initial alpha phase, eligibility requires active contribution and being a “trusted partner,” a term Reddit has not yet defined.
A verified checkmark does not grant users any special privileges within the platform.
Profiles featuring primarily NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content, or those heavily involved in NSFW communities, are ineligible for verification.
Verification Process
Currently, Reddit is manually verifying profiles, with plans to incorporate a third-party process in the future.
Broader Context: The Fight Against Bots
This move coincides with the relaunch of Digg by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
Digg’s founders have voiced concerns about the increasing presence of bots and AI agents online, aiming to create a platform for genuine human interaction.
They are exploring technologies like zero-knowledge proofs to verify user authenticity.
Other Verification Efforts
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is also pursuing methods to confirm online human identity.
His project, World, is set to release an app this week focused on excluding bots.
