Reddit Introduces Real-Time Interaction Features

Reddit is currently deploying a series of new features designed to enhance real-time interaction among its users. These updates include dynamic voting and comment count animations, typing indicators, reading indicators, and notifications for new comments.

Dynamic Feedback on Posts

The latest update modifies how voting is displayed. Vote counts on posts and within feeds will no longer be static; instead, users will observe animations reflecting changes in vote totals as they occur. Similarly, the number of comments will also animate as new contributions are added.

Indicators for Active Users

A new typing indicator will inform users about the number of individuals currently composing comments. This indicator will present an anonymous count of avatars within the comment section. Usernames of those actively typing will remain private, preserving user anonymity.

The intention behind this feature is to encourage more frequent user engagement with content. A similar reading indicator will also be implemented, notifying users when at least two other people are viewing the same post.

Real-Time Comment Updates

When viewing a post, users can now identify newly submitted comments. Clicking the "new comment" indicator will automatically sort comments by recency and highlight live, incoming comments in real-time.

Boosting User Engagement

According to Reddit, these features are specifically intended to increase overall engagement on the platform. The company hypothesized that knowing other users are viewing the same content would encourage greater participation. Initial results confirm this, leading to an improved user experience and a more dynamic platform.

Recent Video Tool Integrations

This launch follows a recent wave of new video tools introduced to Reddit. Last week, the company announced the upcoming shutdown of Dubsmash, its short-form video platform, scheduled for February 22, 2022.

Reddit acquired Dubsmash in December 2020 with the intention of integrating its video creation capabilities. Several new tools, originally developed by the Dubsmash team, have now been incorporated into Reddit.

Enhanced Video Creation Capabilities

New camera features now allow users to adjust recording speeds and set timers. Video uploads are supported in landscape, portrait, and fill modes. Furthermore, users can now adjust and trim multiple video clips.

An updated editing screen provides access to text stickers, a drawing tool, and various filters. Users also have the option to add voiceovers or modify audio levels directly within the editing interface.
