Ram 1500 REV: A Shift in Strategy

The fully electric Ram 1500 REV pickup truck has been discontinued. However, its successor, the extended-range Ram 1500 REV (previously known as the Ramcharger), will move forward.

Stellantis Reconsiders EV Pickup Development

Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, announced on Friday the cessation of development for a battery-electric full-size pickup. This decision stems from a perceived lack of consumer demand for such vehicles, as detailed in a statement released to TechCrunch and on the company’s official website.

Demand and the Revised Strategy

“With a slowdown in demand for full-size battery-electric trucks across North America, Stellantis is re-evaluating its product roadmap and will halt the development of a full-size BEV pickup,” the statement explained. “Consequently, Ram is rebranding its REEV-powered pickup as the Ram 1500 REV (formerly Ramcharger). This vehicle is projected to establish a new standard within the half-ton segment, delivering impressive range, towing capacity, and payload performance.”

Understanding the Name Change and New Approach

The name alteration may cause some confusion, but the core change is significant. Stellantis has abandoned plans for a purely battery-electric pickup in favor of an extended-range model.

This extended-range truck is anticipated to achieve an estimated 690 miles of range by integrating a battery with a gasoline generator – a technique that, while not entirely novel, offers a unique solution.

Original Plans and Shifting Timelines

The all-electric Ram 1500 was initially a key component of Stellantis’ broader U.S. product strategy. The aim was to introduce over 25 all-new BEVs by the end of the decade.

However, the project’s future became uncertain in recent months.

Delays and Revisions

Following its debut at CES 2023 and subsequent presentations, Stellantis began to express reservations regarding its EV truck plans.

Initially, production was slated to commence in 2024, but this timeline was quickly revised to 2025.

By late 2024, further delays pushed the launch of the technologically advanced pickup, featuring a spacious cabin with third-row seating and innovative battery pack options, to 2026.

Production Timeline Confirmed

A Stellantis representative has confirmed that the production of the extended-range Ram 1500 is still scheduled to begin in 2026.
