Quilt Raises $3.5M Seed Funding for Audio Social Network

The Rise of Social Audio and Quilt's $3.5 Million Seed Round

The social audio landscape is rapidly evolving, with podcasts and Clubhouse pioneering the initial wave. Numerous new audio-focused startups are now entering this dynamic space. Quilt, a social network centered around wellness and community building, has successfully secured $3.5 million in seed funding. This investment was spearheaded by Mayfield Fund, with partner Rishi Garg joining the company’s board of directors.

From In-Person Gatherings to a Digital Platform

Initially, Quilt functioned as a platform facilitating real-world community connections, enabling individuals to host gatherings in their homes. Founder Ashley Sumner, previously a member of the NeueHouse founding team, leveraged her experience in creating communities through physical spaces.

Prior to the pandemic, Quilt hosted thousands of conversations within people’s residences. However, the onset of the pandemic in March presented a significant challenge to the startup’s core concept.

Adapting to a Remote World

Sumner swiftly transitioned Quilt’s operations to Zoom. It soon became apparent, however, that video conferencing failed to replicate the authentic connection experienced during in-person interactions. Furthermore, video proved to be an unsuitable format for the nuanced conversations that defined Quilt’s unique appeal.

This realization prompted Sumner to focus on developing a dedicated audio application, ultimately resulting in Quilt 2.0, which launched in the App Store in late January.

Quilt 2.0: Fostering Wellness Through Audio

Quilt empowers users to initiate conversations by creating rooms and providing a brief description of the intended discussion topic. The platform specifically targets wellness-related themes, categorizing rooms into three primary areas:

  • Spiritual and personal development, encompassing topics like meditation, astrology, and human design.
  • Career and purpose, with a focus on aligning work with individual values – these are designed as discussions, not traditional networking events.
  • Relationships, sex, and family.

A key focus for Quilt is maintaining a healthy balance between content creators and those who participate in conversations. The platform reports that 98% of hosts also actively engage in conversations hosted by others. Moreover, over 50% of Quilt users contribute to discussions during any given session.

Engagement Ratios Across Social Platforms

Rishi Garg, with nearly two decades of experience in emerging media, highlighted the varying engagement dynamics across different social platforms. He explained that the ratio of creators, engaged users, and passive observers differs based on the platform’s medium and design.

“Historically, YouTube demonstrated a 1% creator rate, 9% engagement, and 90% passive viewership,” Garg noted. “Twitter exhibited a different pattern, with 10% creating, 30% engaging, and 60% observing. Clubhouse is showing a similar trend, leaning towards a celebrity-centric model.”

Garg emphasized that Quilt’s design intentionally lowers the barrier to entry for content creation. “We deliberately focused on streamlining the path from consumer to creator. Initiating or hosting a room on Quilt is simpler than on any other social media platform.”

Community Norms and Scalability

Garg further explained that the inclusive norms within the Quilt community play a crucial role in fostering participation. Platforms dominated by celebrities or influential figures can inadvertently discourage contributions from others, who may feel inadequate or lack a substantial following.

“Quilt’s strength lies in its ability to empower everyone to share their perspectives,” Garg stated. “This approach is more scalable and resilient than an ecosystem solely reliant on celebrity influence.”

Strong Retention and Spontaneous Conversations

Early indicators suggest strong user retention, with 80% of new sign-ups returning for conversations on a weekly basis. Notably, approximately 60% of conversations on Quilt originate spontaneously, rather than being pre-planned or heavily promoted events.

A Freemium Revenue Model

Sumner confirmed that Quilt will not rely on advertising for revenue generation. Instead, the company intends to implement a freemium subscription model.

Investors and Team Diversity

In addition to Mayfield Fund, existing investors including Freestyle VC’s Jenny Lefcourt and Upside Partnership’s Kent Goldman and Christina Hunt participated in the funding round. New investors included Houseparty CEO Sima Sistani, The Mini Fund’s Eros Resmini (formerly Discord CMO), Allison Stoloff (former Knotel head of marketing), and others.

The Quilt team currently comprises eight individuals, demonstrating a commitment to diversity with 50% female representation and 25% identifying as non-Black people of color. Additionally, 20% identify as LGBT, and 10% as non-binary.
