Windows Vista Temp Files Directory - Quick Tip

Limitations of the Windows Vista Disk Cleanup Tool

The Disk Cleanup utility included with Windows Vista is a useful tool, however, a minor limitation exists in its functionality.

Specifically, it doesn't completely clear the contents of your temporary files folder.

Temporary File Deletion Policy

The Disk Cleanup wizard is configured to remove temporary files only after they have remained unmodified for a period of one week.

This setting, as illustrated in the accompanying screenshot, may not be aggressive enough for users who frequently work with applications that generate substantial temporary data.

Manual Temporary File Cleanup

If you regularly engage in activities like extensive editing or processes creating large temporary files, a manual cleanup is recommended.

To directly access the temporary files folder, simply type %TEMP% into the search box located within the Start Menu and press Enter.

This action will immediately open the folder containing your temporary files, allowing you to selectively delete items as needed.
