The annual gathering of analysts and journalists in Hawaii has once again served as the backdrop for Qualcomm’s major chip announcement. This year’s event featured presentations, discussions, and a look at the latest advancements in mobile technology.

As anticipated, the newest iteration of Qualcomm’s flagship SoC has arrived, accompanied by a rebranding initiative. The name, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, may require some adjustment for those accustomed to previous naming conventions. However, the new silicon is slated for integration into devices within the next four weeks, providing manufacturers with a tight timeframe for launch.

Key Competencies of the New Chip

The core focus of this new chip revolves around six essential areas: 5G connectivity, camera capabilities, AI processing, gaming performance, audio quality, and security features. These represent the key priorities for a leading mobile chip manufacturer in the current market.

Regarding connectivity, the SoC incorporates a 5G modem-RF system capable of achieving download speeds of up to 10 gigabits. This is paired with the FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connectivity System, designed to surpass WiFi 6 speeds.

The imaging system boasts an 18-bit ISP, delivering enhanced dynamic range, color accuracy, and processing speeds. It supports 8K HDR video recording and introduces a new Bokeh Engine for Portrait Mode effects in video. An Always-On ISP ensures efficient power usage for features like facial recognition.

The integrated Adreno GPU promises improvements in graphics performance while simultaneously reducing power consumption. Furthermore, support for lossless audio has been added to enhance the audio experience.

AI and Security Enhancements

AI capabilities represent a significant advancement with the introduction of a 7th Gen engine, providing improved tensor acceleration. Qualcomm emphasizes the importance of AI and imaging in a competitive landscape.

The new platform includes a Trust Management Engine for enhanced security, alongside support for Android Ready SE, enabling features like digital car keys.

Device Manufacturers and Market Competition

Several manufacturers have committed to releasing devices powered by the new SoC, including Black Shark, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Redmi, Sharp, Sony Corporation, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. This list, provided by Qualcomm, is arranged alphabetically.

The presence of major Chinese manufacturers like vivo, OPPO, and Xiaomi, who dominate the world’s largest smartphone market, is noteworthy. Conversely, the absence of certain brands, such as Huawei (though its spinoff, Honor, is included), reflects the company’s shift towards in-house chip development.

Notably absent from the list are major players like Google, Apple, and Samsung. Qualcomm acknowledges the increasing trend of companies developing their own silicon, often achieving impressive results.
